One of the keys to being good at social media and linkbaiting is keeping in tune with the trends and having people who can jump on an opportunity when it presents itself. If you are a player in job or employment space you missed an opportunity earlier this week when Britney Spears performed at the VMA awards

Britney Spears – Gimme More [Live Vma's 2007]
Uploaded by Wonderful-Life

For those of you who missed it Britney gave what can be described as the most lifeless and unenergetic performance of her life. Many less than kind reviewers said Britney has achieved all she ever will in life and her career is rapidly going down hill. However I’m not here to talk about Britney’s poor performance per se, but how you could use it to your advantage.

Taking the “her music career is over” angle you could come up with new career options she should consider. I would take some of her past actions and behaviors into account mix it up with some pictures like this …

Stripper – Britney has the proper wardrobe or more precisely lack of a wardrobe to fit right in as a stripper. A few lessons with the pole and the girl will be giving lap dances for funny money.

Barber – She’s already demonstrated her ability to cut hair and should be ready to start next monday

Baseball Player – Ok maybe she’s got more experience swinging an umbrella than an actual bat but you gotta admit that girl is a natural slugger

Cowgirl – So what if she’s never actually ridden a horse or been on a farm in her life, she knows how to wear the boots, so she’s a shoe in for the job

That’s only 4 but I think you get the idea, plus the girl is a never ending fountain material so there’s always something to work with. If it were me I’d also mix in some normal job titles as well. Why so after the post has run it’s course and gotten some links you can go back and change “accountant” to “accountant jobs” and link to the correct page on your website.

So what’s the takeaway here, be diligent and monitor trends and current events. Look for creative ways bridge the gap between the real world, pop culture and your website.

One of the things about successful link bait is that it will always be effortlessly inspiring and simple in the best sense of the word. This is one of them.
Thanks.

You’re absolutely right.

Britney needs a new job, link-bait… Great Idea!

However… Interest in pop-culture events like that spike and then disappear too fast for most people.

What you describe seems impossible to plan for. You would need a very creative person, in-house to pull that sort of thing off on a regular basis.

(IMO) For that particular piece to work, you would have needed to start working on it the second her horrible performance was over and then gotten it distributed on the web before sunrise.

Seriously… Do people ever come to you and say, “Here is a cash advance… Next time you get some sort of killer, link-bait-inspiration related to Blue-Widgets, let us know ASAP and we’ll run it”.

Keeping some link-bait professionals on retainer might be a good way to go if you can afford it.

I agree that you need to move fast but if you could get this out the door by friday it would still work, by the weekend though dead story.

If I had a “job boards” client this would have happened. if I had one in the past I would have called them up and asked them if they wanted it. If we have a good prior relationship I don’t need the money up front to do a job.

Yes obviously having a person “on staff” who can turn on a dime as needed is the best option.

Also, surely the point of this is to move fast! To stay on top of news, that’s our job :)

As an in-house search marketer I would be the one to suggest to a very conservative boss to do a link bait article reacting to something current or upcoming.

Now with as a software company providing HR solutions to corporations, I would be open to suggestions on how the marketing team could come up with link bait using anything Pop culture related.

Call me uncreative but I would welcome a discussion on something that would inspire an idea to go back to the head of PR with. I can even provide an example we did that didn’t work.

can you pull data for sick days and see how it corresponds to sporting events? For example the average monday has a 5% sick callout rate. The monday after the superbowl has a 17% sick callout rate.

Think hitwise but for employment and entertainment.

I think she’s crazy, and she’s in too deep.

Way too excited and she is a creep!

Crazy all day and night.

Britney watch your kids and it’ll be alright!

You know I read somewhere that Mondays and Fridays account for 40% of ALL sick days per week, an absolute disgrace!

Totally possible to plan for but as Michael and others suggested you gotta be creative, and on top of latest news. If you’re paying attention, many events can be planned for in advance.

I had a site cover the Britney story and tie it to another topic. Covered Barack Obama on Saturday, knowing he’d be in the news with Oprah by Monday.

It’s NFL football season, Halloween is coming, we are about to enter the World Series in baseball, there’s lots of opportunity.

I think it’s only a matter of time before Britney runs over a photographer and kills ‘em. What happened to that sweet old Britney we used to know and love?
