I talked about the time costs of staying constantly connected however to be fair I think I should also mention the opposing side. I recently was reading a thread over at Webmaster World about domains (I’d link to the post but finding anything over there is a bit of an impossibility currently). I kicked the idea around in my head for a few hours, came up with three domain names that weren’t registered and bought them. One of the domains happened to be about the Xbox 360. Now if you hadn’t heard of the XBox 360 before this thread was started you were probably living under a rock, and that’s not the point of this post. The point is on November 1st, thanks to some inspiration from a forum post, I came up with an idea for a website about a very hot topic. I grabbed something from my CSS template library and in the 2 hours or so it took for DNS to resolve I had website up and running. I placed a half dozen links on some other websites, and was getting traffic from MSN within a week. From November 1st through November 21st I was able to make back the $10 it cost me to register the domain. However from November 22nd (the day XBox 360 was released) and November 30th I made more than enough money to buy an nicely equipped XBox 360 through a combination of Adsense, Chitika, Amazon, and other affiliate programs.

There are two points to take away from this post. Firstly there is value in staying connected, if you can find a way to do it quickly and efficiently. Secondly you can actually make money from a website without Google. While there isn’t going to be an XBox 360 like product released everyday, if you can find a formula to build some one page wonders, with little or no maintenance that make a profit every month, it’s a path worth looking into.
