One of the principles of a well run kitchen, especially a kitchen with French Culinary influence, is the concept of letting nothing go to waste. For example when we have Thanksgiving in my house I’ll purchase the biggest bird I can get in my refrigerator. I usually have 8 to 12 people over, and yes I do all the cooking. The Friday after Thanksgiving all the leftovers go into Turkey Gumbo which cooks all day. The turkey carcass gets used for making stock, which has tastes so much better than plain old chicken stock, and has a much richer “mouth feel” than broth from a can. Yea Gray we get it, but what does this have to do with SEO?

While building a website with the potential for a long life is a good idea, sometimes you can learn quite a bit, and well just have fun playing with a short term project. Eventually though you’ll notice that your “Who wants to be A Millionaire” or “Flowbee” website just isn’t bringing in the traffic like it used to, so what can you do with it? First off you should move it onto your shared, discount, or reseller hosting package. The idea is to get your hosting costs as close to zero as possible. This becomes easier as you use it for more and more websites. So assuming your not going to be adding new content and only spending the barest minimum of time on the site the only thing you have to cover is the domain renewal cost of $10 a year. This comes down to $0.83 a month, or $0.03 a day, which you should be able to manage with AdSense.

Looking for another option, if your website is more than three years old, is listed in DMOZ, has lots of green pixel fairy dust, a low alexa rank, is an authority site or has any other redeeming qualities you might be able to sell some text links. Depending on the topic of your website you may be able to earn up to a few hundred a month. If you don’t have the time, resources, or inclination to do it yourself try contacting a text link broker. Another idea is instead of selling standard links is selling presell pages.

Let’s say that your Pee Wee Herman, Golden Girls, or Vanilla Ice website isn’t very marketable. Text link ads or presell pages are still an option you’re just going to have to sell them for longer periods of time like 1 year, 2 years or even longer (think at least 5 years like the million dollar homepage). Here’s the an interesting point longer term arrangements which require less involvement may even turn out to be more profitable.

For example lets say you have a website and sell 5 advertisements or presell pages for $50 each a year, that’s $250. Multiply that out over 10 websites that’s $2500. Allow $500 for hosting, domain renewals, and minimal administrative time, thats $2000 profit. As your publishing network grows from year to year the number of websites you own should increase, and so will your profit.

Now one of the dangers of owning a network of sites, is resisting the temptation to interlink them all together. You should exercise extreme caution when doing this. Depending on the color of your hat and your tolerance for risk this can be quite dangerous. I’d recommend creating several different nodes and never interlinking them. Within each node interlink only as many as you are comfortable losing at any one time.
