Search Engines Gone Wild!!

beach partyMaybe it’s just me, but right now the major search engines like Google and MSN are competing for exposure like two spring break college co-eds in the latest installment of Girls Gone Wild!

Lets review shall we:

  • First MSN announced plans to release a beta version of their search engine on Nov 11th (news)(wolf-howl)

  • Insiders “knew” Microsoft’s engine was going to have 5 million pages indexed more then Google’s 4 million pages at the time (news)(news)
  • In a show of one upsmanship Google doubles the size of it’s index to 8 million pages (news)(news)(wolf-howl)
  • MSN launches and has a slight service outage (news)(news)
  • Next comes the launch of the MSN Blog (news)
  • Not to be outdone Google revises the Adwords program and announces certification (news)(news)
  • GoogleGuy then emerges from the cone of silence and all but tells you how to start reverse engineering MSN’s new search engine (forum thread #94)
  • Next Google enables POP3 access on GMail (news)(wolf-howl)
  • Then the rumors start that MSN is crawling Google results to increase the size of their index (news)
  • Then the discovery of the ‘more evil than Satan‘ search at MSN (news)
  • Then comes the release of Firefox 1.0 and the discovery that the homepage is set google by default (news)
  • Then comes news Google and Firefox have teamed up to create a special page (news)
  • Then it’s suggested the Google - Firefox combo is more than just coincidence (news)
  • Next MSN denies they are crawling Google results (news)
  • Then MSN says the ‘more evil than Satan’ is a SERP bomb (news)
  • Next there is speculation Google will start to advertise the languishing Froogle for Christmas (news)
