Oddities From the Latest Google Update

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

Man the latest update on Google is clearly showing some odd stuff. For example on one domain I own it says the site isn’t in google at all. If I do a site: search on the domain I get 300+ pages but everything except one is in supplemental. If I look back at the page with the highest pagerank for November it’s listed perfectly fine in Google with a cache date of 3 days ago (not tagged as supplemental). Traffic took a downward turn on the 17th. This site was also recently approved in the human reviewed yahoo directory in the beginning of December, so it’s not spam central.

I know all you googly people are off drinking eggnog but man this is the kind of stuff that just makes you pull your hair out and wonder what they heck did they do and why am I getting all this conflicting data.

Update: go see Matt Cutts Explaining algorithm updates and data refreshes

PS: How can there be three pages of people saying stuff is moving at WMW and Matt say “everything is normal“? Reminds me of the Monthy Python coconut exchange

Viral Marketing for Long Term Sales

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Over on threadwatch I recently made a comment that social media should not be used for meeting short term sales goals (link). I read an article today from Reuters that showed how giving something away to generate an early buzz resulted in more long term sales Disney learns lessons from “High School”

In print and online advertising for “High School Musical” that preceded the movie’s airing on the Disney Channel, tweens were directed to the “HSM” Web site to download a free track. That song, “Breaking Free,” ended up being one of the biggest hits on the album. “It was a great way to sample the music and to drive kids to the site,” Whiteside says. “The interesting thing is the track we were giving away as the free download ended up being the most-purchased on iTunes.”

Asking the Questions

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Dean’s got a guest blogger over on his wordpress site. Jessica was nice enough to answer some questions I posted:

Jessica On The Web « Speaking Freely

Which do you use more email or text messaging?

Texting. I send email to my grandparents. My friends all text, email is just too slow and you have to be on a computer. If you’re at a computer then messaging is quicker.

You can’t get better information than that, thanks again Jessica.

Nit Pickers and Link Buyers

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

I met Chris at Pubcon in Vegas where he was live blogging some of sessions on his regular site 10e20.com. I also went out for drinks with him this past Monday night in the city (when people from NY say the city they mean Manhattan, any other use of the “the city” to describe a place other than Manhattan is just plain wrong). Bruce Clay Blog Needs Comments

All right you know there aren’t many times Matt Cutts and I are 100% agreement over anything, but like he says

Bruce Clay Blog. I know I know, it didn’t really start in 2006, but 2006 is the year it became a must-read. Lisa and Susan, get them to turn on comments over there, will ya?

Gosh darn it you need some sort of comments over there. Put some link condoms on the thing if you need to (SEOmoz did), but we need some dialog already. I like the direction you’re going but I feel like I’m watching TV with no way to interact …

Minus 30 Penalty from the Webmaster Central Control Panel

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Just for kicks I thought I’d post a picture from a site that’s suffering from the minus 30 penalty from the webmaster central (aka Google Sitemaps) control panel. The keywords have been sanitized but looking at the right panel is actually rather amusing. For the super-curious the one that is ranking at #29 is an accidental typo that I almost ranked for. Megite Aggregator

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

I’m starting to see referral traffic from Megite.com pretty regularly. I’m also testing it out in my feed reader, and as a concept I’m liking it. In practice it needs a little tweaking, the same stories keep popping up all day even though I read them. It looks like this is happening when they add more sources to the conversation. It’s a bit odd. I’ve never been a big fan of the “river of news concept”. I like my stuff organized in neat little compartments, the mish-mash of unrelated topics is well distracting. However as a vertical aggregator I think it’s one to watch.

Update:
The folks from Megite caught my post and have have responded, sometimes the blogosphere is a pretty cool place!

MSN LinkForward Bookmarklet

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

If you happened see any of the site review clinics at pubcon you might have wondered how do people look things up so quickly. Lots of people use bookmarklets for quick and dirty type searches. For example say you wanted to to know who a site links to using the new MSN [linkfromdomain] command. So go to your bookmark toolbar and create a new bookmark in the location field enter this value:

javascript:location.href='http:/'+'/search.live.com/results.aspx?q=linkfromdomain%3A'+document.domain.replace('www.','');

To use it visit any domain and click on the bookmarklet it should redirect you to that MSN with a linkforward search executed for that domain.

The Domain Question for Matt Cutts

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

MattCutts-Graywolf5.jpgAll right since Matt Cutt’s and I are well on our way to be being best friends (as is clearly shown in the picture to the right of him telling me jokes) I think it’s ok to ask the question that’s on everybody’s mind regarding the site review session, can Google see behind a private registration, and what are some general-ish guidelines about owning multiple domains people should keep in mind. I ask the question on behalf of all the people who aren’t in your list of blackhat SEO blogs and want to keep out of it. Sometimes it’s better to light a candle than to have people wander around in the dark.

OK fine all that stuff about us being best friends is well pretty much made up, and I shamelessly stole the pictures from Marshall Clark’s blog
