New York City Gates

Ok since some people don’t quite “get it” dropping saffron colored tapestries from over 7,500 gates covering a distance of 23 miles is not art. Does anyone remember reading the Emperor’s Clothes? Are you all that naive’ that you can’t see it? My god people wake up and smell the coffee for heaven’s sake!

For the record I’m not some Philistine, I appreciate art as much as anyone else. My first “real job” was being a draftsman for an architectural firm. This was before the days of AutoCad and plotters, when you had to actually draw things by hand. I’ll even go out on a limb and say I was pretty good (drawing 1, drawings). So don’t sit there an be embarrassed thinking your not smart enough, educated enough, or cultured enough to understand this, it’s not art, it’s a con, and I know con when I see one.

Now with that said I don’t think this project is all bad. They had to pay a lot of people to install this display, they had to buy a lot of materials, and they’ll have to pay a lot of people to take it down and get rid of it. Also by keeping the display time very short (2 weeks) they have created that sense of urgency. Hey if we want to see it we better hurry, which is good for business. People will come to Central Park, go for a bite of lunch, or go shopping afterwards. It’s a con it’s not art.
