Part of the problem of having your own home network is you have to be your own network administrator. Yeah you try to keep things documented but like everything else you get busy and forget. There are currently 5 computer on my home network and I have some less than standard setups. As some you know I recently left my employer and had to give back their computer. So we moved my wife email account onto the kids computer temporarily. If for no other reason than to prove Murphy’s Law, the kids crashed the computer and killed the hard drive, and yes lost my wife’s email. After being unsuccessful at recovering it I eventually gave in and bought a new hard drive.

So after looking around I’ve come up with a few programs that may be of interest to some of you

Personal Folders Backup
This program allows you to set up scheduled backups for your outlook account. You still have to tell it to backup manually but it comes with this handy dandy little reminder tool.

Workgroup Backup
This program is fairly sophisticated, it lets you pick folders, and intervals, and exclusion lists, and it works over network drives.

Currently I’m backing up to a redundant file server, but am looking at two other options. The first is a network storage device from Ximeta. You just plug it into any network switch and it’s good to go. The second is off site storage from easyiestfilesystem.com. For a personal plan it’s only $5 a month for 1GB of space, $10 for 5GB. Basically the files FTP over to them every night. This is not a practical solution for 80 GB of MP3 files, but you can easily fit 50 or so standard websites in that amount of space.

Oh and m8 since I know you’re wondering, nope I don’t get a piece of the action on this one.
