C’mon Matt do we really have to have this semantics debate every time something gets changed? The this is an update, that was a data push, the other thing was a xoogler sneaking into the building, get tiring after a while. I know you don’t like calling it an update, even when it is, and then you “fix” the non update, and pretend it never existed, and think we’re stupid enough to not remember, or keep on believing you that an update that really wasn’t an update never happened in the first place.

Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO » SMX Seattle wrap-up

Other than perhaps for some one-word queries, I think most things remain unchanged. And even for most one-word queries, most results remain unchanged. So I’m not sure it’s worth calling it an update.

Let’s talk about how you fiddled with the settings for what is/isn’t supplemental for starters, and go from there

Yeah, this is totally apparent across several of our sites. I don’t sweat it, cuz things always get back to ok. But I was wondering if anyone was going to say anything.

Got a great big chuckle out of that one. Some things never change. :)

What do you mean…? Supplemental isn’t a penalty!!! It’s just a “the users might find you after the 72nd page” thing…

Let’s define “penalty” while you’re at it.

you know the feeling when you realize you haven’t gone mad, that you don’t live in your own little bubble of reality or that Alzhiemers hasn’t started kicking in …
thanks Greywolf :)

Sheese Mike,
You and Matt need to host a tv show like Hannity and Colmes… or Cutts & Wolf for as much as you two bicker :)

I see a site with low PR and only a few hundred links ranking first page out of nowhere for a 2 word search with over a billion results. The site is only ranking because it was created in 1996. I also see forum sites all over the place. My own brand new forum on a subdomain is all of a sudden out ranking my main site. If that is not some sort of update I don’t know what one is.

>Cutts & Wolf
Now that’s a show I’d watch.

Arguing semantics is an excellent way to skirt the issue as long as possible and throw folks off the scent, and I really respect how well Matt does that.

Matt Cutts did not have sexual relations with that woman…well it depends on how you define “sex.”

Matt is waving his hand to perform a Jedi Mind trick on everyone

Someday, some person with a PR of 5+ will just blurt out “That Matt guy is a total jerk” and then watch in real-time his PR drop to something in the range of a banned MFA site.

I think PR is over rated. I’ve been working on several new domains and Have seen them rank for low traffic / low competition phrases right out of the box with 2 or 3 good links. Still at a PR0 one of our sites jumped up on some very competitive / high traffic phrases after about 4 months.
