If you’ve been following any of the Google Jagger update threads on any of the search engine forums some of the common things you’ll hear is “reciprocal linking is dead“, or “I’m dropping all of my reciprocal link pages“.
While this type of knee jerk reaction is understandable, I feel it’s misguided. Reciprocal linking isn’t dead, just low quality links to questionable neighborhoods are dead, or just the links you got from your link monkey are dead. Now I will come clean and say I’ve done some link monkey work myself, even outsourced it, and created more link monkey pages than I’d care to admit. Why did I do it, well for a while it worked. It was fast, easy and got results, and therein lies the problem. Once people find something that works they are going use and abuse the tactic. Links became a numbers game, if the guy above you had 50 links you got 100. Where was the fastest and easiest place to get these 100 new links, why from other link monkeys of course. We traded links back and forth and became this incestuous link brothel, with very little if any redeeming qualities.
I’ve had some sites fall off the cliff in Jagger and other sites start to see organic traffic growth. The sites that fell are full of link monkey links, the sites did better have no monkey business on them, so my link monkeys days are numbered. At this point I would rather have one link from a honest on-topic website that is not from the SEO community, instead of 20 from link monkey pages. Remember nobody like a rotten banana
