Saturn V RocketEarth to Jakob Nielsen .. come in please …

Ok maybe that’s a little harsh, I actually like Jakob Nielsen. For those of you not aquainted with him he is the foremost expert on website usability. It’s kind of like the old E.F Hutton commercials, if Jakob Nielsen says EVERYBODY listens. While not neccesarily disciples, he does have people who follow in his footsteps like Steve Krug the author of Don’t Make Me Think and Vincent Flanders author of Websites that Suck. In fact in an interview Vincent Flanders says the following:

SitePoint: Web Pages That Suck…

Yes - it’s an easy-to-remember URL!

SitePoint: And the name?

Well, I’m a marketing weasel and I hate everything that’s boring — personally, I think being boring is the only sin — so I come up with an attention-grabbing name instead of an appropriate one. Not to rag on Jakob (Nielsen) because Jakob really is a cool guy, but I would imagine Jakob would have called it “Web Pages That Have Mistakes.” You wouldn’t be talking with me today if I’d named it “appropriately”.

In his latest update on Useit.com Jakob says the following:

“The website is becoming a less prominent locus of experience as people use search engines to bring up answers to their current questions. How can sites cope with masses of freeloaders?”

Ok maybe I’m not a candidate for Mensa membership, but I’m far from being the dullest knife in the drawer. So Jakob how about bringing it down a few notches so us mere mortals have an idea what they heck you’re talking about. Keeping the content accessable to John Q. Public is part of usability isn’t it? Just in case you’re interested I do own two of Jakob’s books
Designing Web Usability, and Homepage Usability both of which are fairly dog eared and worn and I still think should be required reading for a website designer or internet marketer.
