Regular readers here know I’m a big fan of social bookmarking or folksonomy websites like Del.icio.us and Digg. However when I mention them as link building tools I get responses like “my sites not about technology or computers”, “my customers aren’t geeks” and even Oilman said “it’s hard to get viral links to a phen spam site”. Want some tips for getting your non tech site’s into Digg, then gather around the campfire …

The problem with people not getting digg is they think techie’s and geeks are different than everybody else, sure they have their own idiosyncrasies, but by and large they are just like the average man or woman on the street. They have the same hopes, fears, dreams, aspirations and weaknesses as everyone else. But enough fluff, lets get to some concrete examples, let’s say you’ve got a finance website how about trying the following kinds of articles:

  • How to Save for a Mortgage on Computer Programmers Salary
  • The IT Professionals Guide to Starting a 401K Plan
  • How to Track Your Investments Using Ajax and Ruby on Rails

Now I did leave out one thing you are going to have to shift the focus of your article to appeal and incorporate some aspects of an everyday geeks life but that shouldn’t be to hard. Want some more, OK how about some ideas for your dating website:

  • The Network Administrator Review of Internet Dating Sites
  • 25 Girls you Hope You Never Check Your E-Harmony Profile
  • How to Write a Dating Profile and Not Sound Like a complete Geek

All right Oilman these last one’s are for you:

  • 50 Network Tech’s Who Need Metabolife (complete with pictures)
  • What Fat Programmers Need to Know Before Using Dietary Supplements
  • How to Tell if You’re a Mouse Potato

The point to take away here is some of your customers are undoubtedly computer geeks and while they may not be your primary customers they are in a position to be able to give you links. Don’t limit your thinking only to technology centric sites like Digg and Del.icio.us try other sites like Topix and Lifehacker. These sites are looking to create content and links and their writers, editors and readers clamor for fresh new material on a daily basis, you can be in a position to give it to them by adjusting the focus of your material to appeal to their audience.

Graywolf,

Not trying to troll I swear — but do you really think “The Network Administrator Review of Internet Dating Sites” could get DUGG or delicious/popular’d?

It would if you made it with AJAX or had goofy fly-out CSS menus. Not everything I try to get into digg gets dugg, but you do much better if you try and dovetail the content to have a greater appeal to that audience, which is really what I am trying to get across.

In a bit of irony I find amusing this article got dugg, for some reason the commenters thought this was spammy, go figure ;-)

Great points. When you generate content that is relevant to both fields, yours and the social net you’re trying to break into everyone wins.
