Over the past few years I’ve noticed Halloween becoming as much of an adult holiday as children’s holiday. On my block the level of exterior decoration has been steadily increasing in frequency and complexity. What was once a few cardboard cutouts taped to the inside of bow windows, has given way to elaborate dioramas with animatronics, intricate exterior illumination displays, and horror movie music for background ambiance. In some ways the displays actually surpass those of Christmas.
Costumes are also becoming more detailed, varied and interesting. However in some cases these costumes are pushing the limits of good taste. Now I’m not a prude by any stretch of the imagination. So if you’re an adult and you want to dress as a sexy nun, or a sultry devil woman I’m all for it. Heck you can even go as far as dressing like catwoman and wear cats eye contact lenses if you really want. However, if you are a parent you do have to exercise your better judgment in choosing a costume for your children. So letting little Billy go dressed in a pimp costume, or permitting little Sally to wear a ho’ costume is not only a bad idea, it’s damn near irresponsible. I have two kids, and I know how easy it is just to give them what they want sometimes, to keep them from throwing a diva fit in the middle of Walmart. Sorry, but in this case, you’re going to have to stand up and make the unpopular parental decision, and just say NO to dressing your kids like a HO’!
Lastly I’ll have to give credit to FilmGoerJuan who mentioned this in his Calm Dreariness blog way back in June.

Well, we don’t celebrate Halloween. But I totally agree. Seeing little kids dressed in sleazy outfits - or even 3-5 year olds dressed as Freddie or Jason, really is irresponsible. C’mon parents wake up!

Yep, the decorations are getting bigger and bigger for Halloween. And lately I’ve seen Halloween decs out weeks in advance on some people’s houses, yet they refuse to put up the Christmas decs sooner than one week before. And the Halloween ones stay up longer now too.
But the funniest thing in your blog, gray, is the link to the “Child Ho” costume. Go to that link and you’ll see that it has a message in bright red letters. I thought it was going to be some form of reality check to slap the sense into some parents. But, NO! It indicates that the Child Ho costumer is sold out due to an overwhelming demand! OMG! Now, please note that there is no shortage of the Child Pimp costume. I’m sure there is a whole other social commentary in that…
