I was looking for something on Google Video today, and looking at the most recommended videos I see some personalization going on.
No doubt that Matt’s, Aaron’s and Performancings are geared more towards my interests, but they aren’t general community stuff by any stretch of the imagination. What I find most annoying is they don’t tell me they are recommending them and there’s no way for me to opt out or toggle it on or off. When I log out the recommendations go away
The more of this I see the more I’m disliking it!

You have been algorithmically judged to be part of the SEO network in your circular linking patterns.
I agree with you that there are some negatives with personalizing search, but from the images here I think Google did ok.
Unless I’m missing something it looks like the only difference is when logged in Google recommended four videos they thought you would like. And they do clearly call them recommendations
It looks like they still showed you everything they do when you’re not logged in and just gave you a little more.
I’m still with you in general, but I’m not sure the example here is such a horrible thing on the part of Google.
I agree they are indeed relevant, I just want the ability to turn it off when I want to.
I do too and agree completely about not having personalized search be forced on me. It’s why I’m never signed into anything Google while searching. It’s a shame though, that not signing in is likely my only option.
