I’m not sure if Google is crazy stupid or crazy like a fox with the way they handle the searches for www.example.com but I see it as an incredible opportunity …

For example let’s look at [www.coke.com] if I were Pepsi, RC Cola or any other soft drink manufacturer getting my domain to list for a search for www.coke.com would be smokin’ ! Things like this are like free handouts if you’re going to offer reputation management services. Now to get to work at starting to crack the code …

After getting a domain booted and taking a screenshot I now rank near the top for the screenshot I took of a domain search. I don’t even have many external links to that page, but it shows near the top of SERP probably due to the title/h1/url presence of the term.

Granted it’s not the www version of the domain which is probably less important and less competitive, but ranking for the domain wasn’t something I was aiming to do - just happened.

Wouldn’t you expect http://www.coke.com to return results for http://www.coke.com though? Maybe I missed the point of your post…

yes I would but what if somewhere in the top 10 was a title that said something like “Widget Cola a Healthy Alternative to Regular Soft Drinks” do you think they’d get clicks …
