At this stage of the game syndicating your content with article distribution websites is still a fairly effective strategy for building links. However as engines continue to tighten the grip on duplicate content and become more sophisticated at detecting patterns I think it’s a tactic being addressed by search engine algorithm’s. So here are my tips for getting more value out of syndicated articles.
First thing you want to do is write six to twelve articles for your website to be syndicated and slowly trickle them out. Make sure you put a unique identifying text string in each one so you can traceback where they are being used. While you wait for your content to be picked up, distributed, syndicated and indexed, there are other things you can do. Does your competition syndicate content, if so find those websites and initiate contact with the site owner. The best thing you can do is offer to write a a few custom unique articles for those websites. Something to keep in mind here you’re actually writing a content link page not an article. So you have more freedom in adding and placing links (see Link Pages are Dead - Long Live Content Pages by Jim Boykin for more details). An important point here is to offer the other site owner access to unique content to get the best results. Secondly don’t be a doofus and offer unique content and give duplicate content, it’s like lieing to your girlfriend, eventually you will get busted. About the time you get finished with that the search engines should have picked up your syndicated content. Contact those site owners about getting more content, but this time getting unique content.
