So we were sorting through the mail this weekend and a large number of bulb, flowers, and planting catalogs happened to arrive. We were sorting through them and came upon something called ‘a three season garden‘. In a nutshell the garden plan has a lot of different plants, that reach full bloom at different times of the year. Yeah GW that’s nice but I don’t remeber choosing botany for $500, so what does this have to do with SEO?
Well grasshopper it’s all about the cross pollination of ideas (pun intended). Some of the most sought after niches and keywords are called ‘evergreen’. Basically that means interest and demand for them remains reasonably constant throughout the year. For example light bulbs are in just as much demand in June as they are in December. Niches that are not evergreen are considered seasonal. For example air conditioners are more popular in June than they are in December (unless you live in the southern hemisphere). If you are looking for ways to build and diversify your income stream, also try to make sure it’s evergreen as well. If you can manage three websites don’t make them all something like bathing suits, swimming pools, and patio furniture. Instead try things like snow blowers, patio furniture, and Halloween costumes.

Dan had some ideas about SEO and gardening a while back as well, although it isn’t all that related to your line of thinking other than the gardening part:)

[...] If you’ve covered industries that are in demand for all 12 months, consider diversifying your site portfolio to address seasonal demand spikes. Graywolf gives a few topic niches if you want to address the US market. Think ‘Halloween costumes’ (November), ’swimsuits’ (summer months) and ‘wedding rings’ (June). [...]
