Ok I haven’t quite got my head wrapped around the idea of folksonomies and how they are going to be the best thing since sliced bread, but a lot of people who are closer to the center of the search universe, think they are going to be big, so I’ve been reading up lately:

Threadwatch - Tags & Folksonomies
DigitalGhosts Desk - Louis Rosenfeld On Folksonomies, Shirky Responds To Rosenfeld on Folksonomies, Tags and Advertising, Folksonomy Experiment.

One of the big benefits everyone talks about is how it allows users to classify things. Now if you’ve ever seen files on Kazaa and Napster, before the RIAA shut them down, you’ll know why this isn’t that great an idea. People are inconsistent and erratic at best. Most people have no concept of information architecture, so they do what seems best at the moment, with no concern for the mess it will create in 3 years.

My second problem is I don’t want all of my bookmarks published. No I’m not worried about the “adult” entertainment stuff, heck I’ll tell you that. I’m concerned about the market research material. If I have somebody who I’m competing against I’ll often set aside a folder just for reverse engineering them, and that’s something I don’t want you to see.

So while I’m still waiting for my light-bulb moment, I’ll keep reading….
