First the US Government department responsible for online threats ,CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) recommended not using IE as a browser (original story). Then came the WebmasterWorld thread about Breaking the IE habit. Lastly one of my buddies pointed out this and several of my other sites were broken in firefox. Ok so I had to give it a try.
Now I’ve been online for a long time. When I was a teenager I remember
dialing into CompuServe with my 2400 baud modem to play text based
games. I remember when IE first came out and you had to plunk down some
at your local software store to get a graphic based browser. It was IE
versus Netscape Navigator 3. Well a few years, a few billion dollars,
and some aggressive business practices later, AOL killed Netscape
and IE was the only major player left standing. Sure some “.EDU” pocket
protector wearing propeller heads still don’t use it, and Opera is the fastest browser on the block, but in the court of public opinion it was IE hands down.
Now when you’re the only competition around, it’s only inevitable that
you become fat, and lazy. So is the is the fat lady warming up off
stage in Redmond? She’s been called up for an audition for sure, but I
don’t know if she’ll get nod from John Q. Public, to take the stage.
In the meantime I’ve downloaded firefox and am loving it. Now like Stuntdubl I’m missing the little green pixels of Google Page Rank, so I’ll keep IE around for that, and some compatibility testing, but as of right now firefox is my default browser.
A buddy of mine hooked me up with the best extention, TabBrowser extensions. It allows you to create, swap and even group tabs together. Pretty darn sweet. See some other Firefox Extentions.
