I was doing some link building the other day and came across a job category I never knew existed, Life Coach. Maybe I’m just old school, but I don’t get it. If there’s something wrong with you mentally, go to a psychiatrist. If there’s something wrong with you physically go to the doctor. If you need someone to tell you you’re not doing things in your life the way they should be done, get a mother-in-law.

Don’t get me wrong mentoring and apprenticeship are great concepts, and I personally wish there was more of it going on. There nothing like learning how to do something right from someone who knows how to do it. However having someone who doesn’t know how to do something, tell you how they think you should do it is, another thing entirely.

I’m a firm believer that you already know the answers to those kind of questions, without having to ask them. Do we fit in at this party? Do you think my boss hates me? Will he ever leave his wife for me? C’mon you really know the answer to those questions. You don’t need me or anybody else to fill in the blanks for you.

So get your keestor up out of that chair, and stop being handicapped by indecisiveness. Take a stance, so what if you’re wrong, maybe you’ll learn something in the process.

Actually, that’s not what a Life Coach is for.

I have had one in the past and their goal is usually to help you achieve more in life and to give you some accountability so that you have more follow through.

What they’ll help you work on varies on what you need help with. Personally, I got quite a bit of value from a life coach while I was using one. Your mileage might vary but they are nothing at all like a psychiatrist.
