Death of Email

According to recent Blog and news story I came across email is on it way out. Of course the study did happen to be done in Korea, but eastern countries like Korea and Japan are much quicker to adopt new technology than we here in the US are. It seems today’s teens prefer IM or SMS over email.
While I’m thirtysomething, for a few more years at least I, don’t know if I’d jump to that conclusion just yet. I remember getting my first Commodore Vic 20 computer. My friend (obsolyte.com) got a Timex-Sinclair. We spent endless hours hacking away programs in BASIC. I actually remember when I first got a CompuServe account and 2600 baud dial up was the only speed you could go online with. I remember my my first official email account was something like 123456789@Compuserve.com .
Yes I have trillian and accounts on AOL IM, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ and can see the lure of IM. I just don’t think it can compare to email. I run more websites than I care to admit to and have upwards of 50 email accounts. I have all sorts of rules set up to help me manage them. However having 50 different IM accounts that all expect an immediate response is too much for even the most skillful multi-tasker out there. In fact lately I’ve been known to turn off IM just so I can get some work done (yes that’s a confession, and don’t take it personally). Plain and simple I manage my email it doesn’t manage me.
