Client work has it’s own set of problems and when you’re publishing a blog where people expect regular updates things sometimes get “icky”.

The first and biggest problem is deadlines. Stuff has to be finished on time, clients don’t want to hear, see or read you publishing blog posts when their deliverables are late. Secondly I like to write about things I currently come across or am thinking about. Sometimes due to NDA restrictions or just common curteosy you don’t want to be telling the world what someone else is doing.

So I got to adapt to fit the situation, when I’m deep in the client zone, I’m going to start going through my emails and answering questions that people have sent me or that I get with some frequency. Look for a few of those next week.

    Michael,

I’m currently in a similar position. I’ve recently sold my ecommerce site and as part of the deal I am consulting them in on the business for another two months.

It can be difficult because while I’d like to take my blog to the next level, I am unable to do so at times because of a) they will read it and b) I shouldn’t have time to post with all of the business transfer issues taking place.

I’ve been finding myself waking up an extra hour early in the morning just to hit my blogging deadline. I suppose you and I should not complain though, as we both have steady work!

I totally agree with you–client work must always come first, unless you’re able to get on a schedule and dedicate a certain amount of time to blogging and adding content to sites/blogs/whatever. I personally find that setting time out specifically for certain tasks like blogging, checking email, and other daily issues is ideal.

Or, once again, you can do what Hagans did and fire all of your clients. ;)

Glad you’re back MG! This week just wasn’t the same without you!

I must be the lucky one. I have plenty of time to do most of the things I should be doing but find myself “having fun” instead. Kids are only young once and I aint getting any younger either.

Also, I really do not have any clients yet as I am really just starting out in SEO localized but I do believe this will change soon.

I long for the day when I am not blogging because of too much work as opposed to not blogging because I am at the park practicing T-ball with a four year old.

Yes, this is the problem with client work - even if you wish to work on your own site first, the client work takes priority over it ;)

While you and Matt Cutts(off reading books) were away, Google changed the entire world as we know it (universal search).

SEO blogs don’t really convert well anyhow do they? I am thinking of turning mine into an “about me” page. :)

Fortunately the few clients I’ve taken on are pretty understanding. It can be a dicey issue though. Keeping a schedule even ‘kinda’ straight has been one of my biggest challenges for years in this self employed ’space’ (flogs myself for using the space word — it’s late and I felt compelled to lay it out there — forgive me).

My case is a little different in the sense I have a fulltime job. Juggling work and trying to keep my blog updated with the latest is just a hard slog..Its all about time management but really tough.
