Back when I was a kid, in addition to having to walk uphill both ways to school while pulling a sled full of orphans and being chased by a pack of hungry wolves, we always had our birthday parties at home. However it seems nowadays once you hit the preschool scene, having a party at home is huge social faux paux. You need to have your party at a commercial location.
Having two small children, I’ve been to more craft, gymnastic, bowling, and dance parties than I care to admit too. Despite the “different themes” of these parties they all seem to have a certain sameness about them. It’s like you’re on the same 90 minute birthday party conveyor belt. The only thing different is the window dressing and scenery.
Today we had my 4 year old’s birthday at Chuck E. Cheese. You would think this monolith of corporate adolescent entertainment to be more of the same. However I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. We had two “hostesses” who went above and beyond going out of there way to make the experience as personal as possible. When it came time for Chuck E. Cheese’s big song and dance number, the big mouse interacted with each of the birthday kids differently making the show unique.
Good to know there are companies that still value good customer service as part of their business model.
