Is Google spamming itself again? We know they got caught cloaking once already. However in what can only be described as bizarre they went and banned themselves. Well Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch thinks they may be up to something again, see Google ranks for Britney Spears.

Spotted via InsideGoogle, Stephan Spencer argues in Does Google deserve a top 10 spot for “britney spears”? that Google is borderline spamming to come up in the top results for britney spears on its own site. I disagree. The content is relevant, nor are the changes suggested necessarily a solution to this “problem.” C’mon along for a journey into the issues at hand. One solution Spencer suggests is that Google should tweak its algorithm to favor pages with more “topical relevance” about Britney? Sounds reasonable, but in practice, not so clear cut.

Now I’d never put up an article like this just so I could put up a picture of Britney Spears. Nor would I link to an article on the superficial where they point out that Britney Spears reads the same tabloids that Britney Spears later writes an open letter about condemming. I would never sink as low as to link to Google’s Britney Spears page and the Jive records Britney Spears page. And although the Britney Spears pictures from Esquire magazine were really good I think everybody made a really big fuss over nothing. Just like when Britney Spears kissed Madonna it created a lot of buzz, but I still think it was a publicity stunt. So lets stop all this fuss about Britney Spears, she’s just a pop star, and not really that important.
