If you’ve seen my kitchen you know I like to cook. Every cook has signature dishes they make. Some are fancy and require hours of preparation (like my version of Death by Chocolate) others are simple and easy to prepare. The thing that makes them stand out is the Love of the Craft the creator puts in them. It makes them more than the sum of their parts. My Black Cow is one of those dishes it’s based on the Black cow recipe from The Ultimate Ice Cream Book just kicked up!

You will need the following:

  • Two frosty full sized beer mugs
  • One 12 ounce bottle of premium root beer
  • One bottle of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup ™
  • Half gallon of premium vanilla ice cream
  • One can of Reddi Whip ™
  • Jimmies or Sprinkles
  • Marischino Cherries

Remove the frosty mugs from the freezer, and squirt a small amount of of Hersheys chocolate syrup in the bottom. Put a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream in the mug. Another squirt of chocolate syrup on top of the ice cream. Tilt the mug slightly to the side and pour the root beer in being careful to keep the foam/head to a minimum. Fill to about 3/4 of the way to the top. Use a spoon to scoop out any foam. Cover top with Reddi Whip. Sprinkle jimmies on whip cream and top with a cherry. Insert a flexi-straw and long teaspoon.

Now the proper way to eat a black cow is to scoop out a little bit of ice cream, chocolate syrup, and root beer in every spoon, and then slurp up all the lovin’ goodness left the bottom.

Alternate versions

Red Cow - Substitute black cherry soda for root beer

Brown Cow - Substitute Cola for root beer
