backup your filesI’ve been working on computers long enough to know the two most important rules:

  1. Save your work often.
  2. Backup Your files.

I also know first hand the consequences of not abiding by those two rules with the Murphy’s law variant, The Files you didn’t save or backup will be one of the following:

  1. The most important file
  2. or

  3. The most difficult to replace

I was first alerted to the problem yesterday morning when my mate Cal Im’d me “dude your blog is down”. After several attempts to access the site I confirmed his observation. I was unable to access the file until later that night at about 6pm. I uploaded all of my files and and republished my blog. I then learned some of my files were missing, no REALLY MISSING. The problem was applications like Blogger and Hello which allow you to publish from anywhere, not just your regular location. Therein lies the problem. Since I created edited and uploaded some of my images from different locations I never bothered to back them up to my local directory. Sure it would be easy to blame the hacker who destroyed the files, or Hello who doesn’t have a way to easily recreate the files but ultimately the blame lies with me for having a sloppy backup system with holes in it. So if you happen to see any blank images drop me a note.

Oh and what were the most important or most difficult files to replace? All of the images from my kitchen.
