Now if you may wonder why this is this so important? If you use a algorithm that is based on the concept that a link is a “vote” for that website being about the text contained in the link, you should have a little light bulb go off over your head. Wikipedia by itself is not the web, but what if more major websites adopt the global policy of outbound links are guilty by default? Your link based ranking formula doesn’t work correctly anymore, in fact it’s worse off than it was before. Now the spammers are going to link out the “correct way”, and without the rest of the “real world” and it’s “natural link structure” to counteract them … the walls will come tumbling down …
