So I’m creating a new campaign with 40 or so keyword phrases, I submit them and I check and 38 of them are disabled with an “inactive for search increase quality or bid” message telling me I have to up my bid to $5 or $10 dollars. First of all how do they know if my ad sucks or not? It’s been in the system for less than 60 seconds. Since I’m a tinkerer I pick the best phrase and up it to $5. Now at $5 I’m not going to be making a profit, but I want to see what happens. I wait 15 to 20 minutes and there I am in the number 1 spot on the side (no premium results on this one). Ok I don’t want to be number 1, I want to be lower. I drop my bid back down the “increase quality” message is back and my ad goes away. Ok let’s try a $4.99 bid … my ad is still gone and “increase quality” message is back. So at $4.99 my ad sucks, but at $5.00 it’s ok? Clearly something is “broken” here.
This is not a $5 keyword … trust me. Are things getting so bad at the plex they have to have an automated way to force me to pay more than I want if I want my ad to show? Can you only bid on a keyword if you want to be number 1 and pay through the nose for it? C’mon Google what’s the story?

The “inactive for search” is not completely true based on my experience. Your ads will still be shown on occasion. Try the lower prices for a while and see what happens.
I’v seen this a number of times when I add new terms. If you wait two days the min bid will decrease to something more reasonable. I think it’s Google’s backdoor editorial review system. I’ve heard that if you add the creative first and then the keywords, this elevated min bid will not happen. I’ve yet to try it out.
This is happening to a lot of folks. There’s a home page thread on it over at WMW.
write about 10 different ads, and play around with your keyword placement in the ad text…
Google needs to keep their stock super inflated, and this is the best way they do it, by sticking it to the little internet marketer. I can’t wait until they burn.
Gray Wolf , I relate to you . It seems that at every corner I turn , I bump into something else to bitch about. I have a bag full for Google and one for Yahoo ! I still have $26.00 at Yahoo which I have yet to spend . They came up with new features for Keywords and advertising , probably because of the class action they were involved in. I do not like Google forcing me to accept the new Blogger. Granted I did not pay for my blogs, Nevertheless I spent a lot of time developing them , and that is wasted .Google is not giving me a damn thing in reality. They get paid for what they do and the blogs are not donations. They are a means to increase their revenue with my creativity.
I am writing off the Internet. I own the domain
http://moreoftheinternet.com and it is no longer functional since 1and1 Internet axed it. I think you should keep doing your thing ,Google is probably Gouging and Gauger is obviously Gouging.
As for me I AM GOING TO CONCENTRATE ON 1AND1 INTERNET and close my mind to the remainder. It is a bottomless pit,and the large companies are calculating how to manipulate the sheep so they will hop into it and be converted to GOLD.
Changes are rapid and expensive and everyone has to update and pay until the bubblle finaly burst . Sonner or later, I think only the dirty dozen will be able to operate a computer and they will be roliing dice for the MEGA billions and Zillions and the one with the biggest ego will be sitting on the throne, like GO- Daddy for instance.
See Ya !

WHAT WAS IN YOUR WALLET
I’ve been told that Google likes to alternate between a high paying ad and one that seems more relevant in order to please shareholders and searchers. Sounds like you got to be the former.
OUCH!
