You can learn lots of things reading the SEOMoz Blog, I do and it’s one of the few SEO blogs I still subscribe to, but this weekend I was reminded of two things I thought I share with you.
First lets talk about Writeboard Friday. He could have easily called it something like SEOMoz video of the week, SEOMoz SEO video tips, or some other such title. However by naming it Whiteboard Friday you’ve come to expect some things. First off you expect it on Fridays, ok duh, but really producing videos is fun, producing them on a regular basis becomes work at some point. Having an obligation sets up an expectation you’ve got to fulfill, if you live up to your obligation the readers will come and they will subscribe.
Second in his If I had a Hammer video he talks about the difficulties and problems with scraping data and how they affect his tools. He comes right out acknowledges the problem, and tells you why it’s happening. Compare this to airlines who hold you hostage in the plane on a tarmac for seven hours giving you excuses. SEOMoz isn’t an airline but that’s not the point, the point is honesty with your customers, users, or audience.

You had me worried for a moment. I posted about this over the weekend and called it ‘Whiteboard Friday’. I thought I had made a mistake but apparently not.
The more I read at seomoz the more apparent it is that they really care about the products they put out. Some of the comments from Matt after the video really surprised me. They go to a LOT of effort to return meaningful data.

Whiteboard Fridays is amazing. It makes working on fridays a little better. SEOmoz really connects with their audience, or at least with me

Hey Gray, whats with the “NO” traffic. I analyzed your blog today and dude look at your alexa graph. Where has all the traffic and people gone? This blog is starting to look like a graveyard. Do something about the traffic!
Look at this week:

I’m down from a top 5000 to 11,000 but my RSS readers have increased from 2500 to 4500. Since I publish full feeds that takes a toll on alexa stats.

Yeah, an explanation behind a delay really, really helps sympathy. That said, I hope the scrapers are sorted soon! What do you recommend for coding them in.
