Great idea. I was particularly pleased to see that Local Mobile Search has so quickly come up in the interviews. I think this is the area of greatest opportunity and it will be interesting to see how the contest between Google and the telcos evolves.

Barry, in the UK Local Mobile used to work in 2005 then Google removed it in 2006…and pretty much noone noticed.

As a local business directory owner I found these interviews very interesting and informative. My list of “to do’s” on upgrades for the new version of the site is growing quite a bit. Looking forward to the rest!

Nice work Michael. Quadzilla’s local search spam tale is too funny, cracked me right up. Cheers!

With a 30k city db, markov chain article generation and cloaking it used to be very easy (until 2005) to rank pretty much for anything local (except for hotels/realtors/lenders which became over competitive by 2003).

I generated millions of dollars worth of leads this way back in the days with little effect. I doubt you can do it effectively on a national level now with zero content sites.

Looking at local search again it’s made me think more about geocentric-seo and how there is still a lot of low hanging fruit to be plucked.

Particularly in non US countries, where unfortunately we are a few years behind.

Hey, superb barrage of enlightening interviews on the local stuff. I guess I have my reading cut out for me now too.

If you don’t mind, I have a quick question on your interview methods. Do you do all of these interviews and make initial contact via email or do you use some other avenues too?

Thanks for the informative blog.

Thanks for putting this together, Michael.

This is going to keep me busy reading all of these for a while. :-)

There is a cool local search engine called Geothingy where users can add and remove urls from the index via a wiki interface.

Thanks for this great info! Local search seems to be ignored by many people in their on-line promotion.
