One of the problem with MySpace is getting “real” friends. If you go through any of the really popular people you’ll end up with a lot of shills, but there are ways around that.
For exammple lets take a look at one of the “friendliest” people on MySpace Christina Dolce. If you look at her friend list chances are you’ll see a lot of the popular myspace crowd, many of whom I doubt are even real people. Now there is some value in getting on the friend list of shills, the friend list gets scraped and you’ll get spread around quite a bit, but you’ll never make a sale (or anything else of value) marketing to a sock puppet. So what you really want to know is where are the real people at?
Let’s say you’re an emo goth dude who’s got a thing for Danny Elfman and Tim Burton. In fact the news of the upcoming re release of the Nightmare before Christmas in Disney Digital 3-D has you so brought you out of your normally depressed state and you went and bought a domain, and set up a forum for fellow NMBC fans, and now you want to spread the word. So where do you find them? Up in that top nav bar you’ll see a listing for Groups. In the fan club section you’ll find the NMBC fan group with 36,000 members with a much higher potential of being real. Now of course standard rules for setting up a dialogue are at work, so don’t be a dingnut and spam the whole group right away asking them to link to your site, use a little finesse … (what you think I’m going to hand you the whole thing on a silver platter?)

Did something similar to promote my wife’s podcast – ended up with great results. I used a bot to grab the ID numbers of 50K members of topically-related groups on MySpace and then sent out email friends requests. The show’s page is at 13k friends now and adds about 300-400 new ones every day.
do you use proxies when you do myspace stuff? My bot runs into trouble sometimes when i do
No – but you tend to have fewer problems on MySpace when you have an account ID that’s under 6 Million. For newer account >6M there are additional anti-spam measures that make running a bot difficult.
Indeed – something I’ve done is run a keyword search for targeted phrases, then when I find people to invite, go through their friend’s list to invite some of theirs as well.
And speaking of goths…won’t drop a link, but you can find me in Showmoney’s friends list. I have some beautiful friends.
if mind is green then i need the green.
