That was the exact subject of an email I got from Google Adwords today. Um hey Google maybe you might want to chose a slightly less alarming message next time. Just because I’ve paused 99% of the ads in my adwords account doesn’t mean it’s been closed or needs to be “reinstated”.

I got a message from adwords a few weeks ago that said:

    “This account has been cancelled.
    This account can’t be reactivated”

Turns out my CC had expired…. I added a new one, and the message went away (eventually)

Considering that AdWords is virtually the sum total of Google’s income stream these messages would be amusing if they weren’t so scary. Several years ago I opened an AdWords account using my “Google Account” which is tied to my primary GMail email address. Becuase of a number of reasons involving other interests I wasn’t using the AdWords account.

I had had an AdSense account for some time before the AdWords venture, using a non-Google email. Adsense sent me a message saying I had to use a “Google Account” as an AdSense log-in. Fine, I tried to use my existing GMail account … get everything under one address/log-in. No can do … “Since you have an existing AdWords account using this log-in, you can not change your Adsense to use this address. If I used another “Google Acciount”, every time I logged into AdWords I would be automatically logged out of GMail, Google Reader, et al. So, I asked them to cancel the unused adWords account. Nope, no can do.

After two weeks of nonsensical emails I finally started mailing transcripts of the idiocy to every higher-level Googler whose email address I could find. In 24 hours came a message from someone at AdSense stating, no problem, we fixed it. And also came a singularly terse note from AdWord’s so-called “Customer Service”. “Your account has been terminated. Do NOT try to re-open it.”

Gosh, Eric and Sergey and Larry … it’s been tough but I have so far been able to comply with your drill instructor barked orders and not spend a cent with you guys.

How does that stock price thingy work again? And Google’s business model is to make money from what service?

Yahoo has the same “alarming message” problems … especially with their product submit program.

I’m starting to detect a theme with your website lately…Google Mutiny! Which is actually pretty funny because I didn’t even know how to spell the word until I typed it in Google and wouldn’t you know it, Wikipedia comes up first for a spelling/definition of Mutiny!

I’m not using adwords anymore, so I should expect the same message from google… what about analytics? Will it still work?

  6. Dave Starr --- ROI Guy Says:

In my case, Ansia, there was no problem because my GMail, Analytics, and all the rest of my “Googly” stuff was alrwady on the Google account that I wanted it to use. … so all that had to happen was for them to make the AdWords go away.

Maybe I should write on that … Banned from AdWords (you always hear all the sad stories about the banned from AdSense types, but not from AW) for trying to use my real name … gripping title, now that Harry Potter is finished maybe I have a shot at the New York Times best seller list LoL

  7. Ansia Says:

Thanks. I should be ok then! Too bad I can’t use AdWords anymore… at first it worked perfectly, but after a while I had more fake clicks than real ones!

I’m having the same issues with Google. They want me to create a new gmail account in order to use adwords, instead of allowing me to use the gmail account I already have.

I’m liking google less and less lately.

    Hi jason,
Yes, it is strange, strange indeed … like going in Wal*Mart and having them tell you we don’t want this one Visa card you gave us, we want this other one … their both vlid cards but we, as the supplier like to see you, as the customer dance to our tune.

AdWords is one of the very few things that Google does that actually _pay_ them money, you would think they would run it a bit more like they cared for the customer.
