So exactly why do I have to raise my bids to $0.20 and $0.30 for terms like [michael gray] , [graywolf], and [greywolf] when there are only 2 other people bidding? Am I somehow not relevant for those terms?

Well that’s obvious, the eBay ad above you is much more relevant… http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=greywolf&btnG=Google+Search

It’s a little unclear in the blog post: do you mean that in order to show at all (not be “inactive for search”) you have to bid that much?

clearly because you are associated with search engine spammers

>do you mean that in order to show at all
yep $0.20 and one $0.30 bid are the minimums anything less gets me disabled for low quality.

What’s your CTR on those keywords? The screenshot doesn’t have that column visible.

Quick clarification on my last comment. The reason for my asking is that I could imagine the interaction with search results is interesting here. People searching on these keywords are likely either:
a) looking for different gray wolves, like say the animal, and so they’re not familiar with you and unlikely to click on your ad
b) looking for you, GrayWolf or Michael Gray, and thus more likely to click on the search results since you tend to rank well for these queries
Seems like in either case you would get impressions but not get a lot of clicks, which would directly hit your quality score and drive up the minimum CPC you would have to pay. This would be reflected in your CTR.

Clarification part 2: On my original post I asked if it was just to enable the keywords because you mentioned that there are other advertisers advertising on it. Enabling an ad for auction with a minimum CPC and the advertisers on an auction are really independent factors.
The quality score is a measure of quality and alters minimum CPC to enable an ad for auction. The number of bidders in an auction changes auction pressure — in this case the number of advertisers wanting to show ads on a keyword — which would drive up the actual CPC you end up paying. It could be that you have a minCPC of 20 cents but auction pressure is driving your actual CPC to be 25 or more cents.
