Blog Search WTF
Posted on July 12th, 2007by Michael Gray in Google
Hey Google blog search how come I can’t blog search for domain.com? What if I wanted to know who mentioned [techcrunch.com] do you automatically think I meant to search for [link:techcrunch.com] ? Why is that important? Maybe I want to know who blogged about [sneakers.com] and not the word [sneakers]. The link command would work if you didn’t send it through the data obfuscation wonkivator, randomly showing me some sub section of links … sigh …

Yeah, that’s a pretty frustrating “feature”. You can work around it by putting quotes around the domain name.

I really do not like the way blog search works on Google nor the way serps are ranked when you search for a topic. I know that the results are suppose to be indexed according to Google algorithm but I think the algorithm falls short when it comes to blogs.

yep, just search for “techcrunch.com” instead of for techcrunch.com and you’ll see a totally different set of results.

Use quotes or put a + before the domain: +techcrunch.com

On a related note …why can’t Google differentiate between upper and lower case? If text is enclosed in quotes, for example, the conventions of search should force a search restricted to the exact characters entered.
But Google, foe all their PhDism thinks that “GPS = “GPs”. Did anyone who works search ever have to turn in term papers at school? doesn’t seem so.
“New GPS satellite launched …” is _not_ equal to “British GPs complain about salaries …”, but Google believes it is.
