As both Youtube and Wordpress are mature products I would have imagined this plugin existed hower after several days looking it doesn’t look like it’s available.

I’m looking for a wordpress plugin that use the youtube API and automatically pulls in new videos as they are posted and automatically creates a single post for them. I’m just interested in working with a username, not keywords or tags. The reason is if you use keywords or tags other people can cause use them and make the plugin to pull in unapproved videos.

Ideally you would be able to configure how often it checks for new videos and tell it which category to put the videos in.

The Youtube API currently only spits out a pic with a link to the video not a true embedable video. Wordpress also munges the code if you write it directly. If you were looking to be quick and easy I’d suggest working with the smartyoutube plugin and spitting out the output in this format and popping that into the post.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00000000

if you wanted to be extra cool you could add a function to put the latest video in the sidebar so you wouldn’t need to update the template when a new video comes out.

It’s a friends personal project so there’s no budget, but they will give you a link, and I’ll help pimp you out here as well. I know I’m not the only one looking for this plugin, so I have to imagine you’ll get some link love elsewhere as well. If you’re interested drop a note in the comments or contact me … thanks.

One of the things that’s really missing from my chumby is a simple calendar widget. I’m just looking for simple month view and the ability to flip back and forth through months.The widget exists in German but not in english. I even tried pulling up the Google Calender widget and attaching it to blank calendar, to find out it only lists agenda view.

I suspect part of the problem is because so few people understand yearly/monthly calendrics. If I were writing a monthly calendar program I would use the perpetual calendar formula. It’s really not as complicated as it looks, basically some simple math applied to a matrix and baada-boom badda-bing.

If you’ve got a son or daughter who’s into programming and you think could handle it, I could probably find some budget for it. I’ve also got some ideas for comercial widgets that do have a budget down the road if things work out …

So I’m working on using Wordpress as a CMS for a “static looking” site and so far I’m pretty happy (get the static front page plugin it saves oodles of time). I’ve learned to keep my hacks in the templates and out of the “program files”. I’ve also moved to using permalinks and have the structure set to this

/%category%/%postname%/

my htaccess is set up as follows

# BEGIN WordPress
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php
</ifmodule>

# END WordPress

The problem is wordpress has to get into ‘the loop‘ before it knows if example.com/foo/bar/ exists or not, and if it doesn’t exist it’s too late to rewrite the header with a ‘404 response code’. Sending a 200 response code when you realy should be sending a 404 can create some ‘false pages’ that get indexed but it also throws things off if you are using the sitemaps plugin to interface with Google Sitemaps. Sitemap validation requires a 404 error code be sent and they check for it (they had a problem a few months back and had to make that change). I temporarily turned it off to get past the check and then turned it back on. It’s a workaround and I’m not really thrilled with it. So how ’bout it any of you clever readers come across this problem yet ,if so have you figured out a solution you’d like to share?

            Protopage is a really neat ajax-style web 2.0 internet based desktop. It is fully configurable page with sticky notes, personalized news, RSS Updates, and bookmarks. A really neat thing it does is let you set up multiple pages, so you could categorize things. However I worry about getting too attached to things like this that are free. What happens if the company can’t find a way to stay profitable and goes belly up? Sure i could pull my data off but gosh what a drag. I guess I’m really going to have to get a wiki running on my development server. Integrating an RSS reader into it somehow would really be golden.

Over on Performancing.com Andy, says the money is in the archives, stupid. Nick talks about Monetizing your Blog, by showing different levels of advertising based on how old post is and whether someone is logged in or not. Now Andy’s doing a blog monetization makeover, and time sensitive ads came up again. Since I’ve got the hood open on this WordPress install I figured I would work up some code to figure out how old a post is.

$postdate = str_replace("-", " ",substr($post->post_date, 0,10));
$postd = explode(" ", $postdate);
$ageunix = (( time() - mktime('','','', $postd[1], $postd[2], $postd[0])));
$days_old = floor($ageunix/(24*60*60));

Basically what I’m doing is getting time and date of the post. I then isolate the just date and remove out “-” characters. I explode it into an array, convert them to unixtime, and do the subtraction. Then convert it back from UNIX time to days old expressed as an integer value (my high school math teacher Sister Miriam would be proud).

If you write a blog or read them regularly chances are you come across the term permalink. A permalink is supposed to do two things:

First it establishes a cool URI (see Cool URI’s don’t change).

Secondly it helps combat linkrot.

So most blogs have permalink or similar concept, which is a good thing. The problem however lies in the implementation. Many blogging software packages (including Google’s blogger) use the [#] character or the word [permalink] as the anchor text for the ‘cool URI’ or link to the individual post. While not the worst thing you could possible choose, both are incredible horrible choices. What you’ve done is dilute your internal anchor text. Anchor text is used by search engine algorithm’s to determine what a page is about, so if you have one link with [post title] and another with [permalink], you’ve opened up the door for search engine confusion. To make matters worse, the more you post the more confusion you create. If you made 1 post a day for a year you have 365 internal anchor links for the term [permalink] and all pointing to different pages.

You can fix the problem pretty easily without destroying the concept. Take the word [permalink] make it normal non linked text, then right next to it change the anchor text for the link to the actual title of the post. If I lost you look down below to where it says permalink for an example. Got it … good.
