Last week Danny Sullivan twittered he was looking for a creative commons image to use. Christine Churchill poked a little fun at me wondering how I was able to get that so quickly. The trick is using search shortcuts, and I’m going to show you how to do it.

For my first example I’m going to set up a creative commons search for commercially licensed images on flickr (aka images you allowed to use on websites you make a profit on as long as you attribute them properly). Go the advanced search page on flickr, put in your query term and check the boxes creative commons, and commercial reuse.

Execute the search, and you’re result should look something like this:

Make sure it says for commercial use so you stay legal. By default flickr returns based on “relevant”, however I find the “interesting” setting gives better results so click that. Now look at the URl it should look something like this:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=magic+kingdom&l=comm&ss=0&ct=0&mt=all&adv=1&s=int

We could disect all of the parameters, but really all we need to identify is the “q=magic+kingdom” part. Highlight the URL and copy it to your clipboard using CTRL+C. Next click on the little wrench icon in your chrome toolbar, and choose options. Look for the area labeled “default search” and click manage.

next click the “add” button another dialog box will open

You need to enter a unique name (in this case flickr) into the box. If you enter the name of a search engine that already exists the green checkbox will turn into an orange exclamation point. Next enter the keyword, this is what you have to type in the address bar/omnibox to execute the search. It needs to be unique and the shorter you make it the easier it will be to type. Next you need to paste the search URL into the URL box. Once you do that you need to go back and remove the “q=magic+kingdom” and replace it with “q=%s”. By placing the %s we are telling the browser to replace %s with whatever term we type in. Click OK, and close out all the dialog boxes. Lets give it a test. Use CTRL+T to open a new tab, by default your cursor is now in the address/omni box. Type in the keyword shortcut (in this case “flickr” followed by the search term). Use a different term than the one you started with to make sure it working, but it should look something like this:

Hit the enter/return key and it should execute the search on flickr for the term “ford mustang” showing only creative commons images approved for commercial reuse, sorted by interestingness.

You can do this with any site the key is getting the right URL for the search, and replacing it with %s. Some sites will require special handling for multi-word terms, such as wikipedia. Here’s the URL for an image search in wikipedia for “ford mustang”

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang

The problem is you don’t have the ability to tell chrome to replace the space with an underscore. However with a bit of URL experimentation and hacking this URL will work:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=ford mustang&go=Go

So repeat the steps above for flickr (naming it something different of course) replace the “ford mustang” with %s and you’re good to go. You aren’t limited to image searches you can do the same thing on any search engine as long as you can reverse engineer the URL querystring. There you have do quick and esy searches across almost any site.

Over the years chances are you’ve seen stories about Google Maps or similar services sending people off course, sometimes by hundreds of miles. When you use any of the mapping or GPS services you always have to use common sense, but I’ve always wondered if this happens because these people maybe aren’t the most technologically savvy people out there. However now that I’ve had a first hand experience, I can tell you yes it can happen even to the uber geeks. Every year after <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/conference/ses-san-jose-2009-recap/"title="SES San Jose" >SES San Jose, we usually stay a few days extra and tack on some family vacation time. This year we decided to go to Yosemite National Park. After leaving SES we drove towards Tenaya Lodge just outside of Yosemite National Park, but stopped for bite of In-N-Out on the way (mmm monster style fries). Following the directions from Google maps on my iPhone we eventually reached concrete road that turned into a dirt road and this sign

Google Maps, and other GPS systems it appears, lead you to road that doesn’t really have access to Yosemite. This happens often enough that some kind soul took it upon themselves to give you the proper directions. Normally this isn’t a problem you drive a little ways, recompute your directions and continue on … normally. If you’ve ever been to Yosemite you’ll know that cell phone service is spotty at best, if you try and use Google maps when you don’t have service you have the experience of being a blinking blue dot on a gray grid.

Eventually we did find our way to Tenaya and onto Yosemite but it took about 90 minutes longer than it should have. The lesson here is even if you are tech savvy you can still get lost using GPS mapping the proper way.

While I don’t make my use of Google products like Google Apps and Google Reader secret it still continues to amuse some people when I do. However a few weeks ago when I went to <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/conference/ses-san-jose-2009-recap/"title="SES San Jose" >SES San Jose, I encountered a new “feature” that occurs when you change time zones, and it didn’t do me any favors.

Before SES San Jose I got emails from Vanessa Zamora of WebmasterWorld and Abby Prince of Web Pro News to schedule some interviews, and I set them up for local time on the west coast. When I got to the west coast Google Calendar recognized this and asked me if I wanted to adjust my calendar, I said yes and it went and adjusted all my appointments. Since I wasn’t prepared for this I didn’t screen shot the behavior, however now that I’m back I did. Here’s a screen shot asking me if I want to change the time zones (note the time’s of the appointments)

Here’s the screen shot after the change to east coast time, notice the appointments moved

I only had a few appointments scheduled so it was easy to move stuff back to where it should be, but I don’t think this behavior is what any users want.

With the impending arrival of Google OS I’ve been spending more time in Google Chrome, and figuring out how to customize things to my liking. Here’s a tip on how to turn off personalized search in Google Chrome.

First thing you want to do is click the wrench icon on the Google Chrome toolbar and select options, when the dialog box pops up, select the manage button next to search engine listings

When the list of search engine pops up choose Google, you’ll see there are three values listed the third one is the one you’re concerned with copy and paste it to your favorite text editor

You should have a text line that looks like this

{google:baseURL}search{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}
sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

That’s the code that google uses to form your search query. To turn off personalized search you need to add the following parameter on to the end

&pws=0

close one dialog box and click “add” a new box will pop up, name your new search engine differently than any of the others (the checkbox will turn green when you do) and paste the code with the
[&pws=0]
on the end into the bottom box

I prefer all of my searches to be non personalized so I made it my default, but that’s up to you. Execute a search and check for the
[&pws=0]
parameter and you’re good to go.

If you happen to know anyone who has been building and publishing affiliate websites before 2000, chances are pretty good they operate with a different set of rules than affiliates today. Number one, they build and develop isolated little pockets on the web, they do very little interconnecting of websites, and they try really hard to keep google from knowing they are associated with those websites. Which begs the question does google know what websites you own?

As someone who fills the role of heavy duty tin foil hat wearing google critic, it often comes as a bit of a surprise to many exactly how many google services I use. Google mail for domains, google voice, google docs, google analytics and webmaster central. This intimate integration has lead some to call me a hypocrite, but I feel it’s hard to be critical unless you know how things work, but that’s a discussion for another post.

Today what I’d like to talk about is, does google know what websites you own, and what methods do they use to gather that information. One of the biggest questions is, since google is a registrar do they have access to private registry information. They have never answered the question (which I think works to their advantage), the best answer I’ve ever seen comes from a guest post by Nick Wilsdon on Jim Boykin’s blog. In 2009 IMHO having a private registry works against you in the eyes of google. There are definite benefits to having a public registry address that matches your on site info and you need to take steps to make that happen.

Next let’s look at your google profile (here’s a link to mine). When you set it up they ask you what websites you own so they can link to them. I linked to my company profile. Now on the inside google thinks I might be associated with some of the sites listed below (sorry for the redactions)

So how is google making these associations?

Comparing notes with a few people, the two biggest discovery methods are webmaster central and Google analytics. So anything that’s in either of those two areas is likely to to be shown. That includes actual client sites, potential client sites or anyone else who shared/granted you access along the way. Makes you wonder about that crazy guy who gave you access and you blew off because he had a shady backlink profile. Does google count that against you?

Next we need to talk about your social graph and XFN links. XFN links are a way of tagging links in a way that establishes a relationship. This video does a better job of explaining it than I could.

Click here to view the embedded video.

So if google comes across an XFN link to a website in your profile they will associate with you in your google profile. Some of the redacted links above are XFN links. Now what if that questionable site in your profile gets associated with something on a third party site via an XFN link … scary stuff.

What happens if you try to submit a legitimate re-inclusion request, will google count any of the bad sites associated with your profile against you … google isn’t saying anything about that situation. or how far and how much data they are willing to use against you. My best advice is to be really really careful.

With the proliferation of social websites, and the publicizing of social graphs. keeping your clean sites separated from your dirty sites is now more important than it ever was. Google is willing to use any scrap of data it can find and associate it with you. Whether it will use that against you remains largely untested. For a humorous look at how bad this can actually get I suggest watching the video below.

At SMX one of the more contentious subjects was the debate over Google’s Android Phone giveaway, and demonstration that they are in practice profiling SEO’s.

Let’s back the clock up and review the facts:

On May 27th at the Google I/O developer program Google has what is the press calls an “Oprah Moment” and gives away FREE cell phones to all attendees.

Within 1 hour of the giveaway the phone finds it’s way up on Ebay with a starting price of $200.

This phone receives 29 bids and has a final selling price of $760

Within the 24 hours after that phone is given away Android receives approximately 50,000 new links.

It doesn’t require a huge leap of faith to assume that at least 1 and quite possibly many more of those links can be directly attributed to Google giving away a cash in kind gift valued at between $200-$760.

For Matt Cutts feelings on this be sure to read You and A with Matt Cutts from Outspoken Media, Aim Clear, and SEO Gadget.

Why does this matter, I run a website ViralConversations.com the purpose of the website is to put free gifts in the hands of bloggers, the exact same way Google did with the android phone, yet I have had to modify my FAQ to tell all bloggers to use nofollow on all links or risk a google penalty, while Google gets to corrupt cell phone searches with impunity.

How does this show that Google is profiling SEO’s and not the rest of the blogging world? How else can you explain high profile A-List bloggers like Robert Scoble and Sarah Lacy accepting free all expense paid trips to Isreal and not getting penalized? How can Guy Kawasaki get “loaned” one, two, three cars in three years and still be within Google’s guidelines . How can “lending” Guy Kawasaki an Audi Q7 for three months in exchange for him blogging about it be OK but I can’t connect bloggers with people who want to give away a pair of sunglasses? Matt Cutt’s says “The closer you get to money for links, the higher risk we consider it”. Go to any rental car agency ask how much it is to rent an Audi Q7 for three months, you’ll have your answer how close it is to the money.

The other cop-out we get is “the link wasn’t influenced by the money”. When Matt asked TechCrunch Editors about this post featuring someone who was recently a paid sponsor on their blog they said it wasn’t influenced by the advertising. First off Matt Cutts running around asking everyone on the internet what their intent is, just isn’t going to scale. Secondly after getting in trouble a few minutes earlier for selling straight links on the CrunchCam do you think he was going to fess up to running an advertorial? Would You? Don’t be fooled Techcrunch knows the value of the link:

Fair Use Vs. Free Speech in the Internet Age: The Lane Hartwell Problem
The currency of the Web, after all, is the link.

What we have is a pattern of behavior that closely mirrors racial profiling. Assuming someone is terrorist because they are of middle eastern decent, assuming someone is guilty because they are black, or assuming all SEO’s are guilty of being link brokers just because they know the value of a link, it’s all profiling and it’s all wrong.

Don’t believe that Google profiles known SEO’s read this post on SEOMoz from Mathew Inman where he talks about Google pre-emptively banning sites he’s involved with. As Jeremy Lubke said “Google is determined to make any scalable link building process blackhat.”

We’ve been discussing and debating this for years and at this point is pretty obvious Google isn’t going to change their policy. However what we can do is band together and continue to point out where google profiles SEO’s and educate more people to Google’s inconsitant behavior.

My advice to you don’t involve anyone with SEO experience in any of your link building tactics, have it run entirely by a public relations person, and you should be fine, Google lets them get away with murder … or at least giving away free cars, cell phones, and all expense paid trips in exchange for links.

Eric Schmidt of Google famously remarked last year that “The internet is fast becoming a cesspool where false information thrives” and that brands were the way out. Well Eric I’m going to show you not only did you get it wrong , but you got it very wrong, not only are big brands just as responsible for the pollution of the internet, but Google is an enabler.Doing some research a few days ago I typed [ferrari development car] into google and this is the result I got back (click to enlarge)

8 of the top 10 results are … (wait for it) … eye-dentical. Don’t believe me go check for yourself on cbssports.com, sportsillustrated.cnn.com, syracuse.com, masslive.com, sports.espn.go.com, signonsandiego.com, q13fox.com, or bx.businessweek.com. This isn’t the first time I’ve written about big brand sites getting a free ride in Google and I don’t think it will be the last (see <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/google/dupe-content-google-thinks-they-have-it-licked/"style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Dupe Content Google Thinks They Have It Licked and <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/google/google-the-double-standard-of-being-an-authority-website/"style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Google The Double Standard of Being an Authority Website). Expect someone from google to dispatch a clean up crew to aisle 3 to whisk away the mess I pointed out so it no longer sticks out as an example, instead of solving the real problem.

What is the real problem you may ask … Google needs to keep the big brands happy, as long as they do, everything is fine, but when they get upset that’s when there trouble. When the secret publisher illuminati Google’s Publishers Advisory Council speaks out they get press, but because I’m “just a blogger” I don’t have much influence outside of the SEO sphere, and can’t do much damage. Google is fully prepared to deal with the occasional bump or bruise I give them pointing out duplicate content and trusted domain abuse, but their share holders, board of directors, and multi-million dollar vested employees aren’t prepared for the nose dive their stock price would take when main stream branded news sites started writing about them with less than favorable ink. It’s not a written policy or even one that’s spoken about, but deep down they all know, if that if stock price goes down, all that 20% free time, free massages, free jelly beans and other perks will fade away.

So how bout it google are you really prepared to deal with duplicate content like you say you are, or are you like mr Schmidt going to keep paying it lip service …

<a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/google/google-online-bookmarking/"class="post_image_link" title="Permanent link to Helping Google Build a Better Bookmarking Tool">

A lot of the time I’m pretty critical of Google, and while I may not agree with everything they do, or every agenda they push, there is no denying that have made the web a better place, and have provided us with some really helpful tools. One of the areas that they have missed the mark on is bookmarks, off the top of my head I can recall having tried four or five different attempts that had some interesting twists but always fell short IMHO. So in this post I’m going to give the folks at Mountain View some ideas on how they can build a better bookmarking tool, and crush everyone else.

Delicious: Delicious is currently my favorite bookmarking tool of choice, I don’t use it for things I visit everyday but I do use it for interesting articles that I think I might want to use or read in the future. I can access from anywhere and even save to it using my mobile phone. However I can’t reach it if I don’t have web access, I can’t type in something I think was on the page, and if the page goes offline it’s gone.

Magnolia: Magnolia seemed like they had the problem solved all of your bookmarks were in the cloud and they had backups of all the pages, so no worries if a page died. Except of course magonolia died, and all of the data did get lost, bummer.

Foxmarks/Xmarks: Foxmarks recently renamed itself Xmarks (umm okay) what it does is sync up all of your local bookmarks and passwords to the cloud, so you can keep multiple computers in sync, or access your bookmarks from everywhere. You have access to all your bookmarks online or offline, but large set of bookmarks become unwieldy, so it works best for stuff you need to visit/use often not long term storage.

What a bookmarking tool needs to do is solve a few problems:

Store all of the sites/links I visit/use regularly

Store in a separate “bucket” the sites I want to keep as a reference for the future

Tags, send to a friend, share

Keep a cache/archive of the sites in case they go offline

Have the ability to search the pages I have bookmarked for text I put in

Sync or backup more than one computer to the cloud

Store MULTIPLE (double bold double underline) passwords per website and sync/backup to the cloud

Google has a lot of this technology already in place it’s just not tied together. You can bookmark stuff but it’s only in the cloud not your local machine (you know people write offline and can insert links). You can share stuff but it’s clunky unless you use google reader. They have a cache of most pages but it’s not tied to bookmarks. One of the bookmarking tools actually does search the page contents but it’s not a well known feature. There is no sync between cloud and browser it’s either or. Chrome lets you only have one password per site, and doesnt sync to cloud.

If I were running a search engine and looking for ways to gather user data that had a high signal to noise ratio something like that would be pretty darn useful. If I had a new brrowser that I wnated people to switch to giving them features like this would be amazingly powerful. If I was looking to convert the delicious power users, giving them a permenant cache and in page searching would be pretty attractive, especially if there was a migration tool.

Google you have all the pieces to make a better bookmarking tool you just have to find the resources to bring it all together, from where I see it a tool like that could be pretty powerful.

Dear Matt Cutts, I know you and I don’t always see eye to eye on everything, but I think we’ve got enough of a working relationship that I feel comfortable saying, that the way the brand update/ Vince change, went down could have been better. Indulge me while I make an analogy to prove a point.

Let’s assume I live in an apartment, I come home one day go to turn on my bathroom light, and nothing happens. I call up the building superintendent, and tell him my bathroom light is broken. The superintendent comes to take a look, and chances are instead of telling me “my bathroom light is broken” he’ll come back with one or more ot the following:

broken light switch

faulty wiring

broken lighting fixture

broken bulb

Now the superintendent’s definition and diagnosis is much more technical, and accurate than “my bathroom light is broken“, however he’s comfortable with the working definition of “my light is broken“, and isn’t trying to deny what I can clearly see, back to the world of SEO.

Aaron Wall spoke about a change he noticed that seem to favor brands, which for lack of a better term became known as the “brand update”. You went into the “this is not an update” or “there was no brand update” mode, to be honest it was annoying and frustrating. Finally you released a video acknowledging that yes something had happened.

Click here to view the embedded video.

First of thanks for for the video, it really helped, but let’s get onto the real problem here. Inside of google you need to be specific, I’m quite sure in your world there is huge amount of difference between an update and what you’re calling “the Vince change”. It’s the same way there’s a world of difference between a lightbulb being burned out and faulty light switch, they are completely different things with identical end results. However in our world we don’t have access to those terms, for lack of anything more granular or specific, we’re stuck with word “update“, or the equivalent of “my bathroom light is broken“.

When you go around stating there was no update (your definition), when we can clearly see there was an update (our definition), we’ve got a problem. It looks like you’re trying to perform some Jedi mind trick, if you keep repeating there was no update and waving your hand eventually we’ll all believe you. Even worse it’s like you’re trying to tell us what we’re seeing isn’t really there and this is one of those “these aren’t my pants officer” moments from cops.

Let’s try to see if we can make things work a little better going forward, here are some suggestions on how things can improve.

Use our working definition of “update”, if that doesn’t work provide us with a list of other terms we can/should use, that work for everyone. We’re human beings we need to name things to communicate about them, nature abhors a vacuum, so if you don’t tell us what works for you, we’re going to use our own labels.

De-Nile is a big river in Africa, it’s got no use here, and doesn’t help anyone. Going the Philadelphia lawyer route of truthfully answering the very specific question, while avoiding the intent of the question is very frustrating. I hoped you saw that first hand at the SMX personailzed search panel you attended.

Use “weather reports” the way yahoo does again, it just opens up the lines of communication so we all know we’re talking about the same thing.

I think I’m pretty safe saying the search community is hoping to work with you, so we can all communicate better with each other, because right now what we have is failure to communicate.
