When you’re running a blog with affiliate links, one of the key factors that can increase your conversions, help you make more sales, and ultimately put more money in your pocket, is to have ads that are targeted to match the content. In this tutorial I’ll be showing you some tactics on how you can improve this targeting using tags.

In a previous post I spoke about integrating advertising into your blog, if you haven’t read that post it might be worth going back and checking it out as we’re going to be building on that post. The instructions here show you how to get things done in the Thesis framework. Of course you can adapt it to any blog, it’s just easier with thesis!

In a post earlier this year Patrick Gavin, spoke about how blog advertising was broken and gave some ideas on how to fix it. One of the concepts he mentioned was placing the same ad in the masthead, sidebar and at the end of the post, it’s that concept we’re going to be putting into place. The first step is cleaning up your tags, and standardizing them a bit. You don’t need to do all of your posts off the bat, but your should start with your most important and post that get the most traffic. Try to reduce the tags down to a handful of manageable concepts per post. For this tutorial I’m going to using travel as an example. For posts about locations or cities (ie Top Ten Nightclubs in Las Vegas) I’m suggest using the city name as a tag. For events such as spa visits or golf trips I’m suggesting using tags such as “day spa” or “golf”.

I like to use the Adrotate plugin for wordpress to handle my advertising, it’s pretty flexible and powerful, allows you to rotate multiple ads per group, and pass links thru a redirection script so you can track CTR and be in compliance with with any google paid linking suggestions.

First step, you are going to need to create an ad group for the masthead, sidebar, and afterpost area, in the example shown below you can see I’ve done that, in this case it’s for the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas.

If you are going to have a lot of ad groups it’s important to come up with a naming schema that’s easy to work with and use it consistently.

Next you’re going to need to put banners in each of those ad groups, in the example below I’ve put two banners in each of the ad groups (sorry impressions and CTR numbers sanitized) click to enlarge

Now that you have some tags in place and ads set up for those tags, it’s time to pull everything together. Open up your custom_functions.php file and let’s create a function to display a masthead banner with this code:

function add_header_image () {
if (has_tag(array('excalibur','Excalibur'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(37,0,1);
}
}

Ok so what does that all mean … the
function add_header_image ()
creates a function to display a banner, we have to call the function for it to work, but we’ll get to that in a second. The
if (has_tag(array('excalibur','Excalibur')))
says if the post has the tag “excalibur” or “Excalibur” to do what’s in the next set of brackets. I’ve found that sometimes WP isn’t case insensitive, so I put both in to be sure. The
echo adrotate_banner(37,0,1);
says go to ad group 37 and randomly display one of the banners from that group. As you can see from the screen shot above we have two banners in that group so we’ll display one of them. You can learn more about how to call ads from the plugin page. Ok one last step add this code into your thesis custom_functions.php file:

add_action('thesis_hook_after_title', 'add_header_image');

That uses a thesis hook to call the
function add_header_image ()
from above right after the title. Now if you’ve got a page that has that tag, go view it and the ad should appear in the masthead. The functionality is exactly the same for the sidebar and after post, you just need to create separate functions for them calling the appropriate ad group.

Now let’s extend the programming, let’s say in addition to the Excalibur Hotel I’m going to write about the Luxor hotel too. I don’t want an ad for Excalibur on the Luxor page, what I really want is an ad for the Luxor Hotel. Here’s how you do it:

function add_header_image () {
if (has_tag(array('excalibur','Excalibur'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(37,0,1);
}elseif (has_tag(array('luxor','Luxor'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(40,0,1);
}
}

What that code does is say does the post has the tag “Excalibur” if so display the Excalibur ad, if it doesn’t see if it has the “Luxor” tag, if it does display the Luxor ad. Again you want to repeat this for the sidebar and afterpost slots.

The next problem is what if we have a post that doesn’t match either of the tags, right now we’re going to have no ads displaying. To rectify that situation you’ll need to create a default ad group with some generic industry banners. Once you do then change your code to this:

function add_header_image () {
if (has_tag(array('excalibur','Excalibur'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(37,0,1);
}elseif (has_tag(array('luxor','Luxor'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(40,0,1);
}else{
echo adrotate_banner(44,0,1);
}

If you notice the last part is an
else
not an
elseif
. Without bogging you down with programming minutia you want the
else
to be last this is what it does when none of the other “if” or in programming language
elseif
is tests are true.

The last thing we need to think about is the order of the
elseif
in the code. The way this programming works is the first condition it meets will be the banner it displays. So let’s assume we have code that looks like this:

function add_header_image () {
if (has_tag(array('las vegas','Las Vegas'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(36,0,1);
}elseif (has_tag(array('luxor','Luxor'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(40,0,1);
}else{
echo adrotate_banner(44,0,1);
}

Let’s also assume we have a post about the Luxor hotel it has the “Luxor” tag AND it also has the “Las Vegas” tag. As the programming is currently set up it will display the Las Vegas ad group, and not display the Luxor ad group. Generally speaking as the specific, in this case Luxor ad will probably be better targeted it will have a better conversion rate, so you’ll want that ad to display. So you should change the order of the “if” statement to something like this:

function add_header_image () {
if (has_tag(array('luxor','Luxor'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(40,0,1);
} elseif (has_tag(array('las vegas','Las Vegas'))) {
echo adrotate_banner(36,0,1);
}else{
echo adrotate_banner(44,0,1);
}

There might be other reasons you’ll want to change the order of the “if” statements, for example one may have a significantly higher commission, so you would want that to appear first. However don’t obsess over getting the order perfect, if the programming works for most posts, but not all of them, just omit the tag that is triggering the ad you don’t want on an individual post by post basis.

One of the great things about the adrotate plugin is it has impressions and CTR built in, so you can see if you advertising is working. If you do a really good job matching your tags to your ads you can get soem really decent CTR rates as shown below:

Where the more generic default ads will have a lower CTR

Ed Berrera <a href="http://www.adotas.com/2009/04/facebook-niches-could-be-the-death-of-it/"title="silliness" rel="nofollow" >contends that as Facebook advertising gets more niche, it will become less profitable to Facebook… methinks he be wrong. (And methinks further that writing like a pirate be good. Arrrh.)

Ed’s article confuses short term inefficiencies and arbitrage – eg, Facebook selling ads at higher rates to lazy advertisers – with long term profitability. He suggests that long term profitability will come from selling ads to lazy advertisers at high rates, because they’ll be broadcast to big swathes of Facebook users.

Long term profitability for an ad publisher comes from selling ads that succeed at generating sales. Typically, lazy advertisers don’t see a great ROI, and therefore they don’t value your advertising inventory at a premium.

Niche ads are more cost effective (on a cost-per-action basis) at driving sales, as compared to broadcast advertising. Thus the demand for niche ads rises over time while the demand for broadcast ads drops over time. See Yahoo’s stock charts vs Google’s stock charts for empirical evidence of this. Recall that Yahoo is largely still a portal selling display ads…

This partly explains why search advertising works better than CPM network advertising. Search is more targeted.

Of course, permission vs interruption plays a part in making PPC more effective too. But even Google’s content network is typically more effective – because it’s more niche – than comparable CPM networks.

Facebook niching will make it plenty of money. Some niches (ex.: horny single males 18 – 26 + dating sites) will prove very valuable, and the auction will drive CPCs up. Hell, why does half the adult web run Adult Friend Finder ads?

Facebook stands to make a pile of money as it caters to niche advertisers, so long as it keeps testing and optimizing its system. And for all you independent webmasters out there monetizing with ads, that’s a valuable lesson.

P.S. I’m a fan of Facebook’s responsible content restrictions (e.g. On ringtone scams) on the one hand, but I agree that they need to streamline and standardize the ad approval process.

That oft-made criticism of their system is beside the point of this discussion though.

(P.P.S. I be bloggin up a storm, so visit me now or I’ll slice your gibbons from your jib and castaway your stowaways. Arrh. )

<a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/22/integrate-advertising-blog/"class="post_image_link" title="Permanent link to How to Integrate Advertising into Your Blog">

So you’ve been blogging for a while, your getting some links, traffic is growing, but your blog isn’t making any money. While you do like blogging maybe it’s getting kind of hard to justify the amount of time you put into it, if it’s not putting any money in your pocket.

For this tutorial I’m going to show you how to integrate advertising into your blog, so that it’s easy to run and how to make it more attractive and desirable to advertisers. While this post is going to have some thesis specific instructions, they can be adapted to work on any blog, it’s just easier to get things done when you use the thesis framework

So the first thing you need to is to make your blog attractive to advertisers, how do you do that, there are a couple of steps. First thing an advertiser wants to see are some traffic stats, you can use a service like Quancast for traffic and demographic information (see mine here) and they also give you a nice little embeddable iframe shown below:

You’ll also want to show how many RSS subscribers you have, if you are using feedburner you can use the tool they have for an embeddable chicklet shown below

Feedburner can be less than reliable, with numbers varying by several thousand, so just beware. Next you’re going to want to set up an analytics report that just shows the number of page views and unique visitors. This is you can mail it to people who want more information (example from my site). I’d advise putting all of this information on an “advertising information” page. Also make sure you put a contact form up so people who are interested can get in touch.

Once you can prove to an advertiser you have the traffic they want, the next thing you want is to create a space that is advertiser friendly. If you haven’t read Patrick Gavin’s post on “blog advertising is broken and how to fix it“, I suggest you do, he does a really good job at explaining it from an advertisers point of view. Simply put what an advertiser wants is traffic that is on target for their market, and prime real estate to put their ads in. If you are going to offer 125 buttons they better be above the fold. Masthead ads are ok, but the more integral they are the better. Leaderboard ads above the masthead are okalmost useless, leaderboard ads in the masthead are better, and leaderboard ads in the top or bottom of the post are much more attractive.

As a publisher you want two things, ads that are easy to set up and take down, and you don’t want to have to keep running after people to pay their monthly invoices. The easiest way I’ve found to handle invoices is using paypal monthly subscriptions, it auto bills advertisers every month, and they can cancel whenever they want. As far as managing and setting up advertising there are numerous plugins but I have found Ad Rotate to be the most flexible. Once you install the plugin the first thing you need to do is set up “banner groups” this gives you the ability to set aside certain areas and assign ads to them. Look at the screen shot below you can see I’m even using one for my “Hear me Speak” section.

<a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/422009_12801-pm.jpg" rel="shadowbox[post-2470];player=img;"rel="attachment wp-att-2473" >

Notice how each group has an ID, we’ll need that information for later.

Once that’s set up we need to enter individual ads for each banner group section. Below is screen shot of the individual ad banner, you may need to click it to see the info but here’s some the info it asks for: start date, end date, link , ad group banner, click tracking option. If you upload the image you can choose it from the dropdown, otherwise just use the URL of the image in the code box.

<a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/adrotate.jpg" rel="shadowbox[post-2470];player=img;"rel="attachment wp-att-2474" >

You can put more than one ad in an adgroup, and display several (like the 125 ads in my sidebar) or have it randomly display one, more about that later. When you are setting this up you probably want to put a few placeholder ads up to make sure it’s working properly. OK onto the code …

Here’s how we tell the code to display the ads

adrotate_banner(1,0,6)

The “1″ says use ad group 1 (in this case sidebar), the 0 says don’t display a specific ad, and the 6 says display up to six ads. So basically it randomly chooses six ads from ad group one and displays them (more info is on the plugin page)

Because I’m using thesis this is really easy all I do is create a function for it like this in my custom_functions.php file

//show sidebar ads group 1
function show_ads_1(){
echo "<h3>Sponsors</h3>";
echo adrotate_banner(1,0,6);
}

then I call the hook and in my case tell it to place the ads above the multi media box like this

add_action('thesis_hook_before_sidebars','show_ads_1' );

This is the benefit of thesis, it makes it really easy to get stuff done on your blog. Here’s how to put an ad in your masthead, again using just the custom_functions.php file

function add_header_image () {
echo "<a href=\"http://www.wolf-howl.com/\" title=\"Michael Gray - Graywolf's SEO Blog\" style=\"border:0px\">
<img src=\"http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/wolf-head-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Gray - Graywolf's SEO Blog\" style=\"border:0px; float:left;\" /></a>";
echo '<div id=topbanner>';
echo adrotate_banner(2,0,1);
echo '</div>';
}

add_action('thesis_hook_before_title', 'add_header_image');

In this example I told it to use group 2 and randomly display one ad. Once you have this set up in thesis you don’t need to monkey with the code,l you need to use the plugin management screen.

The next part I’d like to talk about is RSS advertising. The thing I like about RSS advertisements are, they allow you to monetize your feed. Including advertising directly in your feed allows you to publish full feeds without the need to drag people to your website, because PARTIAL FEEDS SUCK!

I like to use the Feed Footer Plugin, it allows you to have 10 sequential messages, and one gets inserted in the bottom of each post. I allow people the option to purchase just an RSS advertisement, or bundle it with any of the banner ads, but that’s up to you. I also put the word “advertisement” in front, so we don’t blur the editorial line. It’s really easy to enter ads here’s an example:

<a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/422009_21059-pm.jpg" rel="shadowbox[post-2470];player=img;"rel="attachment wp-att-2475" >

That’s all there is too it no monkeying with the code. You could also use Joost de Valk’s feed footer plugin. While it only lets you put in one message it gives you the option of putting it first or last and adding links back to your post.

As far as advertisers are concerned I think a monthly “thanks to our sponsors” post is a really good idea. First it puts the sponsors right in front of the audience, second it let’s your readers know that you are accepting advertising. While they may not be advertisers, they may know someone who is. Once a month is often enough people see it and remember it, but not often enough that it becomes annoying.

Pricing your advertising on your blog requires some experimentation. Try to find a comparable blog, traffic and influence wise, and see what they are charging. If you can’t find one pick a price, if you get inquiries but they never sign up chances are you’re too high. if your inventory is always sold, you are too low. If most of your ads are sold with one or two openings, and you probably hit the sweet spot. I like to offer discounts to people who are willing to pre-pay for 3 or 6 month periods.

The hardest part is probably getting your first advertiser signed up. That why I added a line under my ads that says “Find out how you can advertise here” and I also put it in the monthly sponsor thank you post. Lastly if you don’t have any ads sold put up one or two “place holder” ads. You could make them affiliate links so you have some ability to monetize, also creating a “want to see your ad here” graphic is also helpful.

There are times when I’m maybe a little harsh on the lifestyle blogging community, but more than anything it’s a Judge Judy kind of tough love. What I really want is for people to grasp the concept that just because some people (who happen to be exceptional writers) are able to make money being lifestyle bloggers, doesn’t mean everyone can. However there are steps everyone can take to make their blog more attractive to advertisers, and increase the likelihood that they will turn a profit from their blog.Trevor Edwards, Nike’s corporate vice president had this to say about television advertising:

We’re not in the business of keeping the media companies alive, we’re in the business of connecting with consumers.

Like television stations too many bloggers and blogging advocates think advertisers owe them a living, this is especially true of bloggers on webmaster welfare using google adsense. Few bloggers give any thought to what an advertiser is looking for on a blog, and what they can do to make their blogs more attractive to the people who actually spend the advertising dollars.

During the last economic downturn when a lot of people where home, unemployed, and under-employed blogging flourished. As the number of layoff’s climbs higher I suspect blogging is going to change again, and it will be just as violent an upheaval.

Newspapers are dying, slowly but surely people are switching away from dead tree dinosaur media. There will never be a world without newspapers, but print newspapers will play a smaller role in every-one’s lives, and people consume more of their information in distributed forms. Reporters and writers will start shifting to the web, squeezing out bloggers who are popular solely because of their legacy status. Hobby bloggers who do it out of love, and not because it’s a business, will still exist, but unless your are a top tier author, the only way you will be profitable is to offer a space that an advertiser wants to pay to be in.

You can go the display advertising route or the affiliate marketing path, or if you’re really clever, evolve and use both. Whichever way you go, now isn’t the time to sit on the fence, paralyzed with fear, embrace your passion, and find a way to make it profitable.

The Borgle is doing it again – after Google Maps ripping off MapQuest, Youtube is out to jack SoundClick.

Before I got into the search marketing community, one of the first online communities I really got involved with was the hiphop community. I’d seen 8 Mile, loved the ’seize the day’ message in its theme song and gone home to look up lyrics to the rap battles in it. As things happened, one such community site ranked for the longtail phrase I’d looked up, one thing led to another and the next thing you know I was writing, producing and recording my own songs. Of course, I wanted people listen to them, so like my friends who were already sharing their music, I joined Sound Click – a music social media network that was around ages before Myspace.

SoundClick combined some features to make its site very, very addictive.

First, it had charts. So once you uploaded something, it would get played and assigned an arbitrary spot in the charts. Then, as more people listened to it, downloaded and voted for it, your song moved up the charts. As anyone who’s produced egobait knows, competitive folks will make a big effort to rank higher.

Soundclick Instrumentals Charts

Second, it gave you the ability to make your own profile page, answer questions about the types of music deals you’d do (which let us mediocre unknowns delude ourselves like someone cared enough to read it ) and so on. While I can’t speak for others, I spent countless hours editing and refining my answers. If you bought a membership, you were given greater ability to customize your page with layouts, additional information etc.

Third, SoundClick gave you some rudimentary analytics such as how many plays a song had gotten, highest positions on the charts etc. Just like standard web analytics, these were highly addictive numbers. Paid members got even more data to gnaw on.

SoundClick also offered advertising and promotional options. For paid members, this meant that your new songs got a certain visibility on the site’s ad blocks, and for unpaid members, this meant the opportunity to buy visibility for your tracks. The Borgle is now offering the same opportunity: https://ads.youtube.com/index

Of course, SoundClick’s genius lay in the ability to stroke your own ego: you could manipulate the charts and analytics if you bought their promotional packages. Bragging rights about hitting number were a big deal.

And some people even got truly attention from it. I recall some guy recording a mixtape song with Nas as a result of his success on Soundclick.

Turns out, as Danny Dover has explained, Youtube has a community that is really competitive. Which is understandable, since Youtube has a number of charts that correlate explicitly with particular metrics – and more so than what Soundclick had (they rolled all the metrics into a single chart per genre/subgenre). And get this – Youtube is offering its own custom analytics to advertisers (hattip: Greg Sterling’s post on the new Youtube ads). Barry Schwartz has screen shots.

Is 2009 too aggressive of a goal for Youtube to break even? All it’ll take is a couple of success stories showing up in the media about people whose ads on Youtube bought them the distribution that led to a record deal. Then the copy-cats will flood in, bid up the ad rates and Youtube will become a cash-cow.

Of course, this buy-distribution-and-make-it-big idea can work beyond just music. The video highlighted by Danny Dover lead to an advertising agency buying the rights to the video so they could make a TV-quality version. Aspiring screenwriters, playwrights, actors and so on could use it to advance their careers, or even sell subscriptions to premium video content of their own.

While we’re jacking other people’s business plans, why not throw in a Taxi or Major Contacts like setup and shout the opportunities with record labels from every rooftop?

Methinks that if you’re not too concerned about ethics and the Borgle’s monopoly of the web or perhaps creation of its own web, now’s a good time to buy their stock.

Is my Tin-Foil hat adjusted too tight or am I on the money? Are you worried about GOOG’s constant expansion and duplicating other folks business models? Their control of the distribution of information lets them get around needing a unique value proposition when launching copycat products since they can easily take market share by aggressively integrating the site into search results (OMGz! They’re producing thin sites with low value-add??! Spammers! ) . Let’s hear your comments!

Gab Goldenberg also writes his own search blog, as well as offering link popularity services.

One of the criticisms of scientists, engineers, and programmers has always been just because you can build something, doesn’t mean you should. While the Ralph Lauren iPhone app is much more benign than any piece of industrial or military hardware, it is equally as pointless.

The screen shot on the left is of the new Ralph Lauren iPhone Application. The applications only purpose is to show you items from the Ralph Lauren fashion line on your iPhone. The problem is you can’t do anything with it other than look at pictures or watch videos of the fashion shows. You can’t click a link and be brought to website where you can buy the products. You can’t email the names or descriptions of the products to yourself. You can’t take advantage of any GPS location aware functionality to see where you are in relation to any stores or outlets where you can walk in and buy products. The app exists as monument to itself with absolutely no functionality that follows it’s slick form.

Just because you can build a product, service, program or website doesn’t always mean you should. You need to work on building things that serve a purpose, solve people’s problems, and fulfill a need that people have. If you don’t you’ll be like so many other Web 2.0 companies who are now struggling for meaning and purpose and concerned about having enough “runway” VC funding.

Seth Godin has an article today called ads are the new tip jar, where he advocates clicking on <s>webmaster welfare</s> Google adsense or other contextual ads to help bloggers get paid for their work. He of course completely ignores that advertisers will be paying for clicks from people who had absolutely no intention of using or buying the service advertised. If you click on an ad and your purpose is to make sure the site owner or blogger gets money from the click, and you had no intent to buy or research, that is click fraud.
That kind of behavior comes from some belief that bloggers are entitled to get paid for their work wheter it’s valuable or not (see Adsense: Why Bloggers Don’t Get It). Bloggers need to realize just because a handful of lifestyle mommy bloggers are able to make a living blogging, there isn’t an unlimited market for that type of content, and unless you are the best of the bunch, you will probably make more money working the drive thru window at McDonalds.

Want to make money blogging … write blogs that are commercially viable and attractive to advertisers. Be willing to give up some prime real estate to advertising.

For other opinions see Is Seth Godin encouraging click fraud and Seth Godin Advocates Click Fraud. This is the kind of subject I wish Techcrunch would talk about or would make its way onto techmeme. Not enough bloggers understand the full circle of advertising and buying on the web.

If you’ve been reading blogs for any length of time it’s hard to miss the presence of those 125 x 125 square banner ads in sidebar. They represent a great opportunity for publishers to make money and monetize their blogs. The problem is unless you’re a big or well known blogger it’s tough to find people willing to advertise. It’s even more difficult if you aren’t technically inclined and aren’t comfortable monkeying with your code files every time you get a new advertiser. Lets not forget the biggest headache is chasing people down to pay bills.

So Performancing is launching an advertising network where you can sell those 125 x 125 ads. You set your price and how many ads you want to display. If you’re on wordpress you can download the plugin change one line of code and you’re good to go. They have instructions for other systems as well, I can’t speak to how easy or hard they to install. I installed it on 2 blogs and it took about 10 minutes start to finish.

You set your own pricing, my advice is to start a little lower than you want until you start to sell some inventory then raise the pricing, but that’s up to you. The current payout is a 50% split and it goes up to 60% for you for any ads sold after July 27th.

Something to be aware of is when you have unsold inventory it will fill with the banner ads from other network sites. If I understand correctly as you display network ads you earn credits for your banner to be displayed on other sites in the program. I’m not so sure I’m keen on having 6-8 possibly unrelated ads on my sites, and that’s really my only complaint with the system. So if that annoys you just set your available ad spots to 2-4 until you start to sell some inventory then bump it back up.

Because we are all just squirrels trying to get a nut in world where google makes the rules, it’s prudent to be concerned about whether or not these ads are in compliance with Google’s TOS. If that’s a concern you have the option of making all the ads nofollow. So there Matt

If you want to sign up you can use this link which has my afffiliate code Performancing Ads … and I’ll be your best friend … for life … and I’ll carry your books to class every morning …

If you want to sign up don’t want to use my affiliate code that’s fine too Performancing Ads … I won’t say mean things about … often … or at conferences … too much
