So if you happen to do a search on the word [Ferrari] you’re greeted with this SERP.

Having “undefined” or “tolks” as your description is IMHO less than optimal (ok I really think it says you lame and asleep at the wheel). Looking at the PPC copy, click enticing is probably not the way I’d describe it. Now of course when you are Ferrari and have a decades old brand with a strong offline presence you can overcome mistakes like this, when you are a web 2.0 startup not so much …

* Seems the UK operation are (slightly) more in control of things (http://uploads.screenshot-program.com/my.php?image=upl6154654936.png)
* What prompted you to do this search? Getting a new car?
I think Ferrari’s fine. They don’t really need an online presence at all. I agree that whoever’s incharge could put a touch more effort in though.

Not cool. Although here in the UK there are two words appended to the description that send a shiver up my spine:
“Motorsport news, events calendar, and general information. [Requires Flash]”
Who’d have thought Ferrari = flash? ; )
Well… if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. I don’t see this harming the Ferrari brand any but it does come across as poor. Actually digging about on that site has proven it to be an overall poor bit of development as a simple package solution from the developer.
@Ciaran: just research its impossible put two kids in the back of a ferrari
@Michael “its impossible put two kids in the back of a ferrari”; yeah, but walking’s good for them!
@Chris – much as I hate Flash sites, I tend to think Ferrari are one brand who could get away with it. That said their global official site (http://www.ferrariworld.com) doesn’t rank very well at all – I wonder why
The Ferrari USA site is one I’ve always hated. Beyond functionality though, for a company particularly tied to brand/trademark management they should probably pay more attention to how the site is represented in the SERPS.
Now as far as two kids in a Ferrari, check out the 456 and the 612. Of course, what this does to spoil the kids, that’s another issue.
Michael, you’re often the SEOs voice for change (or Google bashing…whatever you wanna call it), so I thought you might want to take a look at this and make it a more public topic http://developdaly.com/mybloglog/314/. It’s somewhat along the same problem Ferrari has…people just not thinking things through.
I wish I could get a dropshipping account with Ferrari! With a little bit of focus and SEO, their site looks passable.
I did a site search and got only 174 pages indexed.
I did a link search and there are only 157 pages linked to http://www.ferrariusa.com.
I’d love to sell ferrari’s online!
Hi guys, about 3 years ago I was called in to pitch Ferrari for SEO and PPC so I know a bit about the Ins and OUTs … I obviously cannot go into details but I can tell you there are SON MANY constraints on all their websites it’s literally impossible to work on them, let alone the politics and the attitude – as always there is much more than meets the eye …
@griffin, “They don’t really need an online presence at all”, come on!
An internationally recognised brand without online presence…they’d be leaving themselves open to all sorts of SEO’s looking to score off their brand…I’m off to by the domain “www.ferraripencilsharpeners.com” and make a mint!
Looks like I was too late, they’re already there:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=k8X&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=ferrari+pencil+sharpeners&spell=1
Why does “tolk” even appear in the description? It’s not mentioned in the source code so I’m just wondering where Google is pulling it from.
Why doesn’t anyone put the blame on Google because all we know is that garbage in, then garbage out. If Google is more brand protective of their indexing, then the gibberish headlines would be yesterday’s news.
I think all top ten results should be able to get a rewrite treatment through their Google webmasters account, that would make everyone’s lives easier.
Er, Billy…all results can get rewrite treatment through their meta description tag.
there are things in the world which do not need internet at all…like the mamma, spaghetti and ferrari
Michael,
Sorry, this is off topic, but do you find people actually use the Seesmic video commenting feature? I had it in place for a while but no one used it. I thought I’d ask since you get a much larger sample of the population than I do
@Kevin: no only when I video a post
Audi is just as bad audi uk are bidding agains my audi dealer cleints on ppc
Same topic, different company that we talked about in-house today. Searched with G for “running shoes” . . . stopped looking for Nike after the top 30. Again, they don’t need to rank because of their brand awareness, but it couldn’t hurt. Companies with these types of brands just don’t seem to care about SEO. Good for us, bad for them.
Ferrari can do whatever they want. You’d think that whomever holds the webmaster role would potentially spend one afternoon on SEM & SEO though.
ditto we run a football site that beats Nike etal hands down
