There is no where on Alexa's website mentioned that the button on your site will track the wisitors. I have the botton on one of my sites for months now, I get on average 100 visitors a day and I have never seen a "nice little jump"....

[...] On a sidenote I’ve also noticed my Alexa Traffic Rank is dropping/increasing, depending on how you look at it. The traffic is increasing (this I can see in my stats anyhow), the figure is dropping. I’m going to try another little trick that I read about on Graywolf’s SEO Blog whereby I add the traffic rank button to this site and see if my figure drops any lower. Of course the figure is only currently accurate for the number of users with the Alexa toolbar, but I’m presuming that by having an actual image on the site it will hit Alexa for every visitor. It’s currently around 142,000 so lets see if I can get it into 5 figures I’ll be adding a new side column to take this along with some adsense. Now if only I could work out how Site Point do their snazzy ‘hide nav’ trick, then anyone who doesn’t want the ads could just hide them [...]

One possible benefit is that adbrite shows your alexa rank to people considering advertising on your site. They also show your traffic and CTR, so that's probably just an extra. But, personally I probably won't do this unless I informed my visitors this is another way they could be tracked.

It's not my job to worry about alexa's data being accurate or not. I'm not saying you should do it everywhere, but testing is good, provided you know how to take the desired result and do something for your own benefit with it.

Kind of makes me feel the same way I do when using one of Google's "free" tools, you wonder if what they get is larger than what they give?

But I'm game, I will see if things change, current Alexa rank 47k on seobuzzbox.com, lower better? Hmm, ok...

>>Before, it was not fair because sites that tend to have a lot of visitors with Alexa toolbars would rank higher than other sites.

but you would only be able to get a true picture if everybody had one of these buttons - and that is unlikely to happen.

as the users of the buttons are definitely in the minority, it would appear to me that by using the button, you would be giving an inaccurate depiction of what your alexa rank is.

please correct me if i am erroneous.

To Greg's point about dismissing the button and rank, I'd say it's kind of like kids who take SAT prep courses taking the same SAT test as kids who didn't take prep courses. Who do you think is going to do better?
