When I speak with clients about blogging one of the key point I try to stress is that they should try and not only write about their niche, but try to take advantage of and tie into current events. The more widespread and front of mind the news or event is the better. To illustrate this point I’d like you to consider the Super Bowl which is coming up this Sunday.

For those of you who aren’t in the US the Super Bowl is like the World Cup except it’s played every year. The media hype surrounding the Super Bowl is huge, every news and entertainment television show talks about and you should talk about it on your blog as well. In fact I’m going to give you some direct examples of how you can take the Super Bowl from being just about sports and football to being just about anything.

First up let’s take a look at the newly single Kevin Federline. I’m not exactly sure how Britney Spears has better lawyers than Paul McCartney, but let’s just say the K-FedEx isn’t doing as well financially after the divorce as he was before. Being a really good sport or being really in need of the cash Kevin stars in a pretty funny Nationwide Annuity commercial about how you need to be prepared for the changes life throws at you when you least expect it. Do you run a celebrity blog, if so how about talking about all of the funny and humorous commercials that K-Fed and other celebs are in for the Super Bowl.

Want another angle, perhaps you run an insurance blog and struggle with coming up with posts that will interest the general public. In addition to my Ghost Ridin’ the Whip insurance bait why not look at all the amusing insurance commercials. Own a technology centric blog why not talk about all the “dot com” commercials, you could even turn it into a week long series with a retrospective look at note able “dot com” commercials from eTrade and Pets.com.

Don’t limit yourself just to the commercials, the Super Bowl offers a wealth of material. Involved in the wedding industry why not talk about the My Super Proposal, where JP will be proposing live during the game. Again turn it into a week long series with other outrageous proposals even the fake rejection proposal that happened last year. Here’s another idea for you maybe you run a lingerie shop, why not take a look at all of the cheerleaders during the game, and be sure to point out your line of cheerleader lingerie costumes while your at it.

Now that you’ve got a few ideas floating around in your head here’s a few tips on how to execute them better. Rather than sit around playing Monday morning quarterback (pun fully intended) why not live blog during the game. Do I think anyone is going to be reading your posts while the game is in progress of course not, but the sooner your posts are up the quicker they will be indexed, and the more chance you have of getting some blog search traffic from it. Is it harder to be using your Tivo and uploading videos as opposed to sitting around having a few beers with friends during the game sure. However if you want to be on the bleeding edge pushing the limits there’s nothing like live-blogging an event.

Here’s my last bit of incentive for those of you who still remain unconvinced. The Monday after the Super Bowl is one of the few times you’ll be able to promote truly commercial websites to the homepage of social media sites like Digg, Netscape, Reddit, and StumbleUpon and you won’t be called out right away for it. However by Monday afternoon the diggers with their terribly short attention span will have seen it all already so anybody who didn’t post early and post often will have missed the window of opportunity.

Ok, I clicked the cheerleader lingerie link but “The word “lingerie” has been filtered from the search because Google SafeSearch is active.” Oh well.

One thing about current events - I worry about wasting time on something that only has a very short shelf life, the page may be dead in the water not too long from when you write it, maybe better to focus on perennial topics, on the whole.

One of the best pieces of advice all year.

I didn’t realize you could use a TiVo to record and then upload videos to your computer. My stupid DVR doesn’t do that. I guess I know where I’m headed tomorrow.

This is awesome. It reminds me of how Janet Jackson made me about 900 bucks a day in ad clicks a few years ago from taking advantage of this very topic! You rock Michael!

I’ve just posted about how the Bears are going to win the Superbowl. Even though I’m a total idiot about sports…alteast I can say I’ve contributed to the Superbowl blog posting campaign that probably 5 million other bloggers are doing.
