Your central nervous system is the control center for your entire body. It is made up of your brain, your spinal cord and a network of nerves throughout your body. Your nerves work with your brain to send messages back and forth to control your body’s actions. The brain sends these messages to the body down the spinal cord, which runs from the brain down through the back and contains nerves that branch out to every organ and body part.
Just how are these messages transmitted in your body? They travel using electricity! Cells that make up the nervous system are called neurons. Your brain has billions of neurons and they have many jobs to do. Neurons are connected to other neurons and cells within your body.
